Recently I was selected to attend a civilian endodontic program and have started the process of separating from the Navy. One of the concerns I have for the future is finding health insurance. My wife and I are hoping to have our first kid before or during residency. I've heard horror stories of the costs associated with birth (especially if something is to go wrong). While my HPSP contract requires me to go IRR for 4 years, I've been considering going SELRES instead. The access to Tricare plus some additional funds will relieve the pressure of solely relying on the BAH stipend that I will get from the GI Bill. Has anybody gone that route (or know someone who has) and can shine a light on this topic. Thanks!

Consider national guard. Same commitment and will probably pay more. Can probably stay local for your annual two weeks too. That aside, I did not have TRICARE with one of our kids and had the healthcare through the university and we didn’t end up paying that much more than TRICARE.

If you're IRR with an HPSP commitment can u actually join a reserve unit? Maybe reach out to at Reserve recruiter

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately my school doesn't offer health insurance. Our likely options are either Tricare or Medicaid.
