Seminar classes

Do med schools look down upon seminar classes at all? The way my major is set up, I need to take a 2 credit unrestricted elective, and I'd rather take a 2 credit class than a 3 credit and have that extra credit! A 1 day/week class sounds easier than a 3 day/week class!

Anyway, the topics of these seminar classes are actually very interesting and I'd love to take some of these if med schools dont look down upon them....so what's the consensus?

Yeah. You're good, take the class. Diversity in your coursework is good, and if you've been completing the reqs., you've got plenty of lab and lecture 🙂

I don't see why admissions would like down on them. I took seminars through the psychology department since I was actually a psych major. They all focused on discussing the latest research in specific areas of psych such as learning and memory. We probably had to read about 15 journal articles a week. I think if you were going into research the seminars would look great.

I wanted to add my question to this thread instead of starting a new one.

I took a mandatory 1 credit engineering seminar class, and I asked the teacher (who is also the department head and my academic adviser) to write me a LOR. Do you think this LOR could count as a science LOR? The class was only 1 credit, but I was assigned a letter grade. This professor teaches several other 3 credit classes and he knows me very, very well and he has seen what I am academically capable of.

I am taking a seminar in neurophysiology course right now that is taught by a practicing neurosurgeon. He was the head of the neurosurgery residency at my state school several years back. Let me say this is the most intense, challenging, and fun course I have ever taken. This class has a great reputation with the state medical school, so I guess it depends on the seminar.

I don't see why not. I've never seen a school specify that a letter has to come from a professor who has taught a class for a certain number of credits. If a school you were applying to had a requirement like that, it may not work, but I've never seen anything like that before.

Although, keep in mind that engineering may not count as BCPM, and I think there are schools that require a letter from a BCPM professor. Again, I'd check the requirements for schools you're interested in. I think you'll probably be alright most places.
