Sending letters of interest

So is it a good idea to send letters of interest to the schools you still haven't heard a thing from?

If so, what should I write in it? send it as a letter or email? etc.

Need advice on writing this.

I'm wondering about the same thing! Does anyone have any advice? Is this a good idea at all? When should you send it? Should you call the schools instead to ask about your application status and let them know that you are "all about their school"?
Anyone done this before?
