This is from a med student speaking for himself: I am not even concerned about learning from residents anymore. I pay my tuition to earn a degree, not to learn. If learning is actually a #1 priority, I wouldn't have paid my tuition for the 1st 2 yrs of med school because I learned almost nothing that was clinically useful.

That being said, when I am at the clinics (especially ob/gyn), I don't expect to learn from residents. I try not to ask questions unless I have to, or the time is completely appropriate (for example, when the resident says, "Do you have any questions?"). I don't believe I deserve special treatment, teaching, being part of a team, or whatever. I pay to get my degree, so I can someday legally take care of my own patients. I can learn by studying on my own.

So why are there still residents who make me go in the OR, hold some retractors and blades for them, and yell at me because I can't staple correctly? I didn't want to go into the OR or staple. I was forced to do it by you residents. And I don't want to go into surgery or anything with surgery. I am interested in primary care. Also, why do you frown upon me because I stayed up late to study for the shelf and came late to Grand Rounds?

I disagree with some other threads against residents. Yes, we pay tuition, but we don't deserve special tender treatment by residents who worked hard to hold the special title of M.D. behind their names. But ***don't yell at*** me for not doing some scutwork incorrectly, when I am doing it with a smile on my face with no complaint or contempt. I'll happily do the scutwork, and I'll pay my tuition to learn on my own and get the MD, but don't yell at me for doing a scutwork incorrectly for which I didn't volunteer and have no desire to learn for my future. Don't yell at me for holding a blade, retractor, staple, or blot incorrectly or at the wrong times.

Aren't you the poster that started the "I got yelled at by a Lab-tech" thread?
LOL!

How do you hold a retractor incorrectly?

NO contempt...yeah right

Ha ha. I'm a self-learner too, so I know what you're talkin bout. But hang in there. As a primary care doc you'll definately be referring patients for surgery. It'll help that you know what you're sending them to. You'll be done with it soon. Good luck. 🙂

There are surgeons who yell at you to inform you to remove the retractor so they can do something else. You don't have to yell at me for me to remove the retractor.

Oh, yeah.. Like "would you move that f-ing retractor gddammit? Stupid med student".

You will be in for quite a surprise if you think that being yelled at for no reason and being constantly scutted ends when you get your degree! Med school is only the beginning!

I really meant finishing residency and having my own practice.

You ever wonder why it is that tons of people tend to have problems with you?? Maybe it isn't the people who are the problem.

Are you saying that as an MS3, you have never experienced being yelled at by a resident or attending for no reason, and it is just me?

I have been yelled at one time by an attending for not paying attention enough, but I have yet to be yelled at by nurses or radiologic techs.

I'm eight months into my third year, and not once been yelled at. Just started surgery though, so we'll see what happens.

I'm not a med student yet, but I did work for 6-7 months in a ER as an EMT, and I've got to say... it just takes like 2 seconds to be pleasant to someone. I think there's zero excuses for yelling or being rude to someone *especially* someone there to help and be a part of the team just because things are getting a bit hectic.

CBC, what you may be experiencing is the equivalent of hazing... those residents got harassed as students and now it's their turn especially since they're still probably getting a sh$t-storm from the attendings. Don't take it personally and don't be the same way when you're a resident or attending.

Or perhaps she carries around a poor attitude towards learning, a gigantic sense of entitlement, and no sense of reality.

Seriously though, cbc, every job/school has its ups and downs. Sorry you don't like surgery, but at least it's temporary.
👍

I do find it interesting that you are interested in primary care. Having never met you, I don't have a true sense of your personality, but you don't really sound like a people person. Again, that's just an observation; I've never met you.

Maybe not. It's probably a bit of both. Medical culture is a bit sick in general but we have to conform somewhat to get along. Sometimes in medicine it seems like we have to instill in ourselves the same disorder as those around us in order to progress. Perhaps she hasn't aquired the appropriate problems yet. 😀

Or perhaps she carries a great attitude towards learning, a tiny sense of entitlement and a medium sized sense of reality. Or perhaps she has a great sense of reality, ok sense of entitlement and a moderate attitude towards learning. Or perhaps... or perhaps.... or perhaps she's not you're ideal bad student....perhaps. Who knows? She's probably not too much unlike any of us but just a bit bogged down. How about we quit dealing out blame here and be a bit more helpful.

You apparantly aren't very familiar with cbc's (he?she?) posts. Check out previous posts. cbc carries around a HUGE sense of entitlement, a poor attitude and a serious lacking in personal skills. When advice, in the past, has been offered, cbc has lashed out with personal attacks.

So, before you lecture me about being helpful, be sure of who and what is being said. I go out of my way to 1-teach and 2- offer up helpful advice for those that want it.

I DONT coddle posters who think its thier right to b*tch and moan and insult other posters because they don't like what's being said.

Thanks Chameleon... Maybe she'll sit on yours. 😀 Just kidding. I think she would just feed her.

Yeah, your posts are generally very supportive and constructive Roja. I thought this last post seemed a little out of character for you. But, you're right, I don't know cbc's posts as well as you so I acknowledge that you may have a perspective on this that I don't have.

I'd be willing to bet though, that someone with a sense of entitlement doesn't really have a good grip on what a 'sense of entitlement' is. So telling them not to have it probably wont work. See what I'm getting at. It is tempting in exasperation to just tell people to stop what they're doing but it tends to just make them dig in more. Sort of like yelling at a barking dog. It just doesn't work. I don't know what better to do in this case. But I know that doing nothing is better than blaming. Eventually someone will come along who by whatever twist of fate will understand the problem and know what to do. That's the way I see it. No offence is intended Roja. 🙂

Good point. I know you didn't mean offense and I didn't take any. And your point is EXACTLY why I vowed not to respond. But sometimes, I am weak.

🙂

Ha ha 🙂 I think that's a weakness we're all born with. It'll probably be a decade or two before I eliminate that completely in myself. Easy to see it in another. Much harder to catch it in myself.
