Sept 26 pcat scores

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Definitely retaking it. I have no idea how I scored so low for reading comp. Does anyone have any tips on how to do well for that part? It almost seemed to me like almost all of the answers were correct so obviously I am doing something wrong.

This is addressed in multiple threads. I'd start with the one entitled "Reading Comprehension".

QA 402 45 really didnt have enough time to finish left about 10

Do you mind sharing if Dr.collin's study material was helpful at all? Good job!

VA 432 89 Bio 440 94 RC 402 48 QA 413 64 Chem 434 88 Comp. 424 85 Ran out of time on the RC, haven't taken calculus yet lol, studied for a day or so before the test, definitely retaking

Lost my PCAT virginity today as well, or should I say the PCAT lost its virginity to me:

VA - 423 - 82
Bio - 466 - 99
RC - 430 - 87
QA - 443 - 94
Chem - 463 - 98
Composite - 98!

Literally did the happiest of happy dances when my proctor handed me my score sheet. But forreal, QA was a monster. Probably had a good 10-15 questions blank/unattempted when I hit the 5 minute warning.

same here thats what dropped my QA score - the questions were about 4 times as hard as i anticipated

no i did not use dr collins at all

i studied bio from kaplan and i took gen chem 1 and 2 over the summer so i just looked it over the day before the test
I'm a voracious reader so it was no problem- i didnt have to study at all
RC you cant really study for- i got an idea of what it was like when i took 2 pearson practice tests

QA- did really badly because i didnt have enough time but additionally i didnt take calc yet so i did a quick overview hoping it would help a bit. so basically i have no tips for QA besides get used to taking it in timed sections.

Studied three days with the 4th Ed. Barron's for my first PCAT today. And I have to agree with everyone who thought that QA was a real "bear" on this test. Usually, QA is my strongest test, but I was left making guesses on six or seven the last couple minutes. Not the best feeling on which to leave a testing room!

Good luck to everyone with their applications!

Congrats! How'd you prepare for it if you don't mind sharing.

I would highly recommend ordering the Dr. Collin's material. I worked through every single practice test pretty diligently and I would say I was adequately prepared for the test. The Pearson practice tests were also extremely helpful. My friend gave me a Kaplan study guide that I didn't find that useful.

More specifically:

Chem - know Collins and your straight
Bio - Collins was pretty adequate, but I also have a pretty strong Bio background
Quant - The concepts and calculations in Collins are similar to the PCAT. Though, as I said before, the QA section on the actual PCAT was much more difficult and time consuming so I recommend darting around to questions you know you can answer in about 30 seconds - 1 minute.
RC - Collins was way too easy. Use the 3 Pearson tests to gauge yourself.
Verbal - Collins

In conclusion, master most of the Collins material and take the Pearson practice tests and you will be fine.

Hey guys, I think I got really lucky.

I studied the Kaplan's big blue book for a couple of days and took test 2&3 from pearson's. Composite scores matched well with the pearson's tests. Hope this helps with my apps!

Hi everyone, I just took it today for the second time (last time was in January 2010 and I felt it was much much kinder than this one). I am wondering if I should retake it in January for another 200 bones? I am happy with my scores except for the MATH section - I had to guess most answers as I hadn't studied at all. I wasn't ready for today's test but I thought I might as well attend it to get experience with the Computer-based test in case I take it again.

Verbal - 451 - 97
Bio - 446 - 96
RC - 437 - 92
Math - 405 - 50
Chem - 430 - 85
Comp - 434 - 94

I'm only applying to a couple schools in Canada - UBC and U of T. I know UBC only looks at the composite (for now) but does anyone have experience with U of T? Should I just retake the PCAT to improve my dismal math score?

Thanks 🙂

You did great. I would keep this score if I were you. What were your scores on the January 2010?

First time poster and first time doing the PCAT was yesterday!

CHEM: 95
QA: 47

COMPOSITE: 85

Was that QA section brutal or was it just me? I almost cried during lol. 47... I'm actually pretty decent in math. I had like 15 questions left when time was running out so I just went through all of them and picked a random answer :S Too bad, all of the easiest calculation based ones were at the end.. I barely even managed to save my last BS'd answer haha. I feel the Pearson tests weren't similar to the QA to prepare me for it 🙁 There was basically no calculus on the actual test!

Not sure if I want to retake. 85 I think is around average for UBC I believe.. my GPA is just average too haha.

Lorisaur, the QA was brutal to me. I'm pretty good in math too; I knew how to work all the problems on there, but the time constraints killed me so I didn't even answer all of them. I should not have only studied how to do the math, but also how to go through 48 problems and pick the best to do in the time I have.

I studied the collins and it prepared me for the content, but I didn't time myself to prepare me for picking which answers to guess on.

Yeah, I should have just went through all of them first. I really don't want to retake it because I THINK 85 is sufficient for an interview hopefully but then speedypear up there is also applying to UBC with 94 PCAT 😛

Lorisaur, I'm in the exact same boat as you. My comp score ended up being 84%, but I did pretty bad in math and RC (no suprise for math but the RC--- guess I should read more!) I want to apply to both UBC and UofT and I need a decent score on the PCAT to help bring up my average. So it's a bit of a grey area for sure as to whether or not to write it again.

My verdict= I'm pretty happy with my score considering it was my first time but I've decided to write it again in Jan just to give my application a little more insurance🙂

Dude... PCAT scores in the 80s are solid scores. Go look up the averages (most schools publish them) for their incoming classes.

Also, the whole reason I'm commenting in this thread is because I think PharmaKimchee is a cute nickname. 😀

UBC only takes your most recent scores, so if your score went down for some reason they would still look at that rather than your 84th percentile score. Just something to consider if you haven't already.

I am very content with my score!

I wanted to ask those that are or have applied to Pharmacy school in Texas, if this score, along with a 3.0, and some leadership experience would give me a good chance for UofH, UT, and Tech?

As far as preparation for this test goes: I prepared all summer using Kaplan's self-study course, only to get a 53%. I didn't think Kaplan's course did a good job focusing in on many areas. Once I received that score, I took ya'lls advice on sdn and purchased Dr. Collins that same day! All I can say is, IT'S THE BEST CHOICE I EVER MADE in preparing for this test!

How I used Dr. Collins:
1) focused on each section a day by starting out reading his notes and really understanding it! ***(fully utilize the VERBAL SECTION of his material. it reallly realllllly helps!!)*****

2) took a few subject tests and reviewed what I missed each day.
I finished taking all his practice subject tests (except reading section) and read his notes (took about 3 weeks of my summer)!

3)After finishing his prep. material, I started over, taking each subject exam about everyday.
(At this time I began my A&P 1 class which was mostly just reviewing previous bio and basic science).

4) I purchased all three Pearson tests to test how prepared I was. I took each test two weeks apart and reviewed thoroughly. (my practice scores were pretty accurate to my actual score)

Math is usually my forte, but it was definitely a challenge, time being the major factor.

Main point: Dr Collin's material is extremely helpful, as it gives you enough practice questions to improve your speed and focus in on what is really tested! It is a very good investment!!

I hope this helps. I figured I'd pay it forward, since a lot of these posts helped me get a decent score! 😀

oops correction (i had copied and pasted from person above so i wouldn't have to type everything...so forgot to change the scaled score) this is what I got but PR is still the same:

VA - 427 - 86

RC - 397 - 40
QA - 421 - 75

sorry if I confused ya'll! Hope everyone's test went well today! 🙂

I was a first time examinee and I personally found Dr.Collin's material to be extremely helpful. It is the only material I used. I took the test today and I scored the following:

Verbal: 89
Biology: 91
Reading: 97
Quant: 47 ...didnt finish 🙁
Chem: 95
Comp: 94

Hope this helps...

You did great. I would keep this score if I were you. What were your scores on the January 2010?

I actually got the same composite score on the Jan 2010 PCAT! But I did much better in the math section, though worse in the sciences. I will definitely retake in January if I get a poor writing score....I read on U of T's website that there's a minimum score they requre for the Writing section....and on this week's PCAT, I totally blanked on one of the topics and only got a few lines in before time ran out, and wrote something really stupid for the 2nd topic.

For anyone applying to UBC, I get the feeling that the PCAT doesn't mean very much to them. I applied this year with a great PCAT (94) and okay average (83) but it was the interview that did me in.

PharmaKimchee your username is so cute haha! I'll think about writing it again, but I reallllly don't want to especially after that math.. 🙁 So grueling! I honestly thought I would get like composite ~60 lol.
