Hey guys. I was wondering if anybody that took the July 2011 Pcat, studied with Dr. Collins pcat prep material?? I took the January Pcat 2011 and had a composite score of 60%, ( I know its low). I'm currently studying with Dr. Collins material and with Kaplan study packet. Is Dr. Collins material worth it??

I took PCAT today (July 27th) for the first time. I used Dr. Collins study packet and Kaplan PCAT book. It helped me a LOT.
here are my scores (percentiles):
bio: 99
chem:98
quant:91
verbal:86
reading:28 (I thought it went well but apparently not)
Composite:95

I didn't use it and scored a 98th percentile. But if i could afford the investment i would of gotten the packet for sure considering how statistically significant the score increases seem on this site.

Get Dr. collins, split it with someone else if you cant afford it, but get it.
Drill it in your head and you will do great on bio chem and math.
For VA and RC, go with kaplan, Dont forget to time yourself
I just took my pcats today and Dr. Collins deserves a ton of thanks! 👍

His verbal was pretty helpful. I saw like maybe 3 repeat questions. His RC is a complete joke though. I did one RC practice test and realized it was way too easy. I used the Pearson tests for RC. I also read a lot of books so I guess that helped too

I believe i have the summer 2010 dr collins set... will that be good enough? thanks!
Do you have about 9 practice tests for every section? If so, then it should be complete. Also, you should buy the 3 Pearson practice tests and take them before your test. Make sure you time yourself just like the real exam.

Yepp! ~9 prac tests for each section, also a few updates. I also have a pearson book and some pcat flashcards... i hope these help me!!!

thanks!

So the PCAT didn't go so well today, bombed the two most important sections for admittance. Granted I didn't study them much at all but I took the pearson practice exams and scored 80-99 percentile range on chem! Then I get my PCAT and got a 43?! I panicked due to time at the end and pretty much guessed on a ton of the calculation problems which I know how to do. Bio I just bomb every time and I don't know why? Maybe because Kaplan's book sucks?! Got a 51 on bio, 64 composite because I actually did well on the other 3 sections... Would you all recommend Dr. C that much? Was it the practice that made it easier or did it simplify the material compared to the Kaplan book. I just felt lost and I'm definitely retaking in September. Pointers?

-Sorry for the book but all of the 90 percentiles on this site are scaring the hell out of me. I know it is more because people who take the time to hop on this blog care the most but god!!!

It is because people who get on here are much more likely to use Dr. Collins. I highly recommend his study guide. Make sure you study well in advance. I would start studying now for the september test.

And fyi, yes Kaplan does suck. It's too much info for bio and not enough info for everything else

Well Im not gonna say it totally sucks lol, but well the bio section was just so many details that you dont need to know to take the test.

I'd prefer Dr. Collin. Learn the material, do his practice test, and time yourself. Make sure you know what you miss. Dont just do as much as possible, focus on the answer key as well .

I studied 2007 Dr.Collin and I did horrible. Do anyone know if the new Dr.Collin one the same as the old one?

I also studied a 2007 Dr.Collins with the updates until August 2010 and did awful! I hate that I wasted the money on an older one, I'm just going to dish out the $300+ this next time and dominate the sept. pcat!

WOW 90+++???
I really hope this Dr.Collins packet really pay off!!! I have been studying since june, working on chemistry and quant everyday. September 19th is when it all goes down. Secondly how was the format for the computer based test?

I am new to this website. I have the same problem with you that i have the old version of Dr. Collins stuff. I used 2007, and i did not do well in the exam. My question now is do you think the new version have much difference than the old ones. Just to know your opinion before i buy the packet. I will be thankful if others also share your opinions.

What do you mean by format?

They log you in and your countdown starts immediately for whatever section is first. This kind of frustrated me at the start of the test then after the break because I lost at least 10 seconds. Not too picky with time but I like to use up all the time I have if needed. It's one question on the screen at a time and you can bookmark questions and review them after each subtest.

My only suggestion is to prepare for RC more. I didn't and my composite suffered greatly. Preparing for RC with Dr. Collin's is not enough, I did and didn't make it over 50, yet I got 92 on VA because of his packets on VA. Start reading scientific journals and try to read as fast as you can and make sure you are retaining as much information as you can as you read. People say Pearson practice tests are great for preparing for RC, I didn't take them so I wouldn't know, but now I kinda wish I did! The questions in RC are TOUGH and not straight forward, so Dr. Collin's is like cakewalk! I scored almost 100% on all of his RC practice tests and had 10 mins to spare after each.

I took the PCAT on July 27th & I'm retaking it on Sept 21 because I didn't do so well as I wanted to. Esp. the RC & Verbal. I found RC to be very dense and the questions were really ambiguos. I really thought I did well on the verbal section but the score doesn't show that🙁 My computer actually froze and logged me out after that section so I'm trying to contact pearson if there was any glich in the system that may have affected the score (27) because I thought I did well on it! I also had atleast 5Q's from Collins review! English is my third language so I didn't expect to improve my vocab in 3 weeks for Verbal so I concentrated on the subjects that were more important for me to do well on - QA, Chem, BIO!

Anyways I used Dr. Collins dated as far as 2009 also. It was extremely helpful for chem, QA, and bio. I actually thought that Kaplan Bio was very helpful too. I thoroughly read ALL the bio chapters from it, made my small notes, reviewed all the study reviews from Collins and did the practice sets. I scored the highest in BIO (84) and apparently the only section I finished in 25 minutes. The rest I need to work on timing - i ran out of time for ~3?'s per section because I spent too much time on them. I only had 3 weeks - 3 hrs/day of studying due to summer class, and work. QA and Chem review questions in Dr. Collins were really close to whats on the exam. (maybe the new updates have more recent questions because there's geometry on my packets which isn't on the exam)

I have more material than time to study🙁 I got the Kaplan classroom material from a friend who took the class with flashcards, the kaplan self study book, Dr. Collins, REA flashcards - great for reviewing, barrons - 2002 version from family member! I also have the Princeton Review MCAT material from the class I received for free in a raffle. Might use that for practicing for RC! If you think you do not need to study for that section because you really can't study for it - I thought the same and didn't do so well🙁 I didn't get a chance to purchase the Pearson practice tests - def. will do that for the next one.

I personally found watching the videos for chem and bio at below link to be helpful - I am a visual learner and its great to have someone reteach you the material in a more interactive way! They are short & on the point.

Sorry for the long msg but i really hope this helps! I took a standardized test after a VERY long time - last time I took one was during HS for the AP test in a firehouse - lol!!🙂 So the testing center and the computerized version itself had a hugh impact on me - I kind of felt overwhelming when I got there and nervous throughout the test! idk why! It was in the evening too - 5PM🙁 For anyone taking the PCAT for the first time - prepare well ahead!👍

Yea I def agree on the RC for Dr. Collins is a cake walk. Every time I work on the RC packet, I always have about 10 mins left while completing the exam. Guess I have to start working on some scientific journals like you said. I have the updates from the Jan 2011 exam and I'm waiting for the July 2011 update. How was the BIO, Chem, and Quant sections for the July 2011 exam?

People, scientific journals are NOT the answer. To learn RC, the BEST and ONLY way to learn the material is to find a study guide (any study guide) which explains the answer to the questions and try to understand the key. You will foolishly waste your time reading (It's definitely important to read, however, it will NOT help your reading comprehension unless you ask yourself questions about the passage in the same guise as what you see on the PCAT which frankly, you will not do ...) without trying to apply the knowledge from reading. People CHRONICALLY prepare for this section in the worst manner possible.

Thanks Chemguy. Did you use Dr. Collins for studying the pcat? If so could you please give me any advice on the quant section.. I'm reading alot of threads and they are saying the geometry is not on the pcat any more. What should I really focus on in the Dr.Collins quant section???

I have an older version but I purchased the updates and it helped. Especially in verbal and biology. Then again I also have the Kaplan online course supplies and an audio CD, but the Collins was the most helpful.

When people are saying there is no Geometry what exactly do they mean? Are they saying there will be no word problems that involves triangles or circles? Their lying if that is what they mean.

Thanks for the posts. They were very helpful. I'll be studying this semester to take it during the summer. I didn't realize the RC section was that tough. I took the official practice exam and did better in RC than I normally do on standardized exams.

I studied the 2008 version and I did horrible on the chem portion...
Im not sure what to use to prepare for the next pcat. 🙁

Did you have updates? I recently purchased the Dr. Collins packet through SDN, and the latest copyright date indicates 2009 on the packet, but it also came with July 2012 updates. Do you think this is up-to-date?

How many pages is your July 2012 update?
