Just thought I'd let everyone know:

St. George's University now has federal loans available! :soexcited:

That is AWESOME!!!!!

Wow news travels fast, especially good news. It is true, U.S. Federal Loans will be available to students starting in the August 2011 class. Not too late to get your applications in, but hurry up!

Final AVMA site visit is scheduled for April.

90% of the U.S vet schools are buried in two feet of snow right now, Sunny and 82 degrees at SGU, so come on down.

So is SGU on its way to AVMA accreditation, then?

U.S. federal loans, and AVMA accreditation, really have nothing to do with each other.

That being said, SGU is scheduled for a final site visit from the AVMA in April, so hopefully AVMA accreditation is in our near future as well.

As a Canadian, I still can't afford to go, right?

Unfortunately the U.S. Federal Loans are only available to U.S. Citizens. There are other loans you could apply for, and depending on the province you live in, there are possibly some grants and scholarships as well. have you spoken with our financial aid office?

Congrats, SGU!! That is great news for all of your students.

Can you explain a little more about the process of accreditation and where SGU is in the process?

I have mixed feelings on SGU getting accredited (assuming it will).

Right now, SGU is a great option for people who don't have a competitive GPA and GRE score. If you've messed those up, but still really want to be a vet, and get rejected by all of the AVMA schools; you still have a good chance of getting into SGU. And going on to be a successful vet.

If SGU gets accreditation, I think they'll see a huge increase in applications. The more applications they get, the more competitive you'll need to be to get in.

Ahh, sorry. I didn't mean to insinuate that - I was more talking about the final AVMA visit in April and if that meant SGU was working its way towards accreditation.

The only thing I can really say about accreditation, is that it is a long process, and we are reaching the final stage of the application process. The AVMA has had a couple of consultative site visits to SGU, where they leave us recommendations on what to improve on. Having compelted those things we are now scheduled to have our comprehensive site visit, which will determine yes or no for our accreditation. Typically a school hears within 90 days of that site visit, so I really won't be able to say much more until around June.

How is SGU handling clinical rotations? Currently, don't most students go to the US for those? Will they continue to do that if SGU becomes accredited?

Yes we are currently affiliated with 23 of the 28 vet schools in the U.S. as well as ones in Canada, Ireland, England Scotland, and Australia. We will continue to have those affiliations even after such point we gain accreditation.

Thanks for answering my questions, Jeff. 🙂 SGU doesn't need to have its own clinical rotations in order to be fully accredited?

If I'm not mistaken, no. Ross is AVMA accredited and they have clinical rotations in the US. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's true.

Ross is accredited? 😕 Not according to their own page. They're in the process of being accredited, but aren't there yet. They aren't listed on the AVMA page of foreign accredited schools either.

Ross is not AVMA accredited, that being said, there are some schools that are accredited and do not have the conventional 4th year.

Here is the AVMA's accreditation policies:

SGU has taken some rather large strides the past few years to gain accreditation. I'm staying optimistic about it. 🙂 But becoming a title IV school and being eligible for federal loans finally is a huge deal!

Oh, well I missed that boat! Don't know why I thought it was. I'll keep my mouth shut now 😳 Thanks for correcting me!

They do get federal loans though, maybe that's where you got confused. 🙂
I think Ross just recently had an AVMA visit.

Yes, they did. They're in the process of trying to get accredited, and should have been visited at the end of January.
A complete self-study was prepared and submitted to the AVMA-COE in July 2010. Upon review of the self-study, RUSVM has received notification from the AVMA-COE that the School has been approved for a comprehensive accreditation site visit to occur January 16-20, 2011

AVMA accreditation is, I'm assuming, a very long and arduous process. Western was only pretty recently granted full accreditation, though they had partial from the beginning (I think).

They are also an example of a school that doesn't do rotations on location, but is accredited. It's not exactly the same as how Ross and SGU do rotations, but yeah.

UCVM is in the same position. They're new enough that they only have partial accreditation at the moment (I think they're supposed to get full accreditation after their first graduating class in 2012, but I don't know). They also do off-site rotations.

Slightly off-topic; but does anyone know when SGU is expected to make final acceptance/rejection decisions?

They have a rolling admissions process. I believe you should hear something regarding whether or not you have been offered an interview within a month of your completed application being submitted. Depending on the time of year, it can take up to 4-6 wks to hear back after your interview. If you are accepted, then you have a certain amount of time to send in your seat deposit. I can't remember, but I want to say that was about a month-long window as well.

If you have already applied, I would ask your admissions counselor about your status.

I'm so happy for all you guys at SGU! I know the seniors from SGU that are at UTK are really excited and that it will be retroactive from the fall.
