okay i was wondering if anyone knows where i could find a psychiatrist to shadow in the los angeles area. carson,ca 90745 to be more specific. where would i look? i want to shadow a psychiatrist bc i think that would be better since that is the specialty i would like to go into. so if anyone has any info or if there are websites devoted to things like this i would appreciate it..

To be honest I don't think you're going to have an easy time finding a psychiatrist who will allow you to shadow, due to the intensely personal nature of the work. Privacy protection is more intense for patients with mental illness than for other patients. I would think your best bet for getting some exposure to the field would be to apply for a tech position on a psych ward. These can often be obtained with no prior experience. Plus, you'll get paid cash money!

This is key. Psychotherapy especially. Your best bet is to look in major hospitals and see if you can tag along on a team interview, and possibly psych ERs might be more open to shadowing.

so how would i go about finding a tech position in a psychiatry field? is it even possible to gain experience in a psychiatry work area if your only going to be in a tech position? and if i do get the tech position how would it benefit me in applying to medical school? would it be more beneficial in shadowing a general physician? or another type of doctor?

I had always thought this too, so I was a little surprised to hear that a lot of people in my class had shadowed psychiatrists as pre-meds. carpet bomb with emails and you'll probably be able to find someone to shadow.

how do i get their emails and information? i was told by my advisor to call them but i think that is a little weird. emails seem more professional. but where do i start?

If you figure it out, let me know. I've called over 100 doctors in varying specialties and all of them have said no. Most of them don't do it at all and the ones that do only allow med students. I also prefer email, but I haven't found any listings that offer email addresses either. I am boggled by how so many people seem to find shadowing opportunities. They must know something I don't.

ha, well. if you want i could write the emails for you. lol.

but serious, just go to the website of a nearby medical school and look of their psych department. then start emailing. if you dont hear anything from them, try the next closest school.

why medical school?

that's where doctors work.

private practice docs probably won't let u shadow. if u really want, you could work through your insurance list...but they don't usually include emails.

also, make sure you send your emails from a normal looking name, without lots of caps up and down.

are you really asking a question here? obviously a hospital is also a place where doctors work. the more emails you send the more chance you've got.

also you can use your schools alumni system. that is often likely to improve your chances of someone actually returning an email.
