I would like to know more about anesthesiology. I have read what I can find, and I would really like to shadow and anesthesiologist for the day. Is this even possible? (I imagine hospitals aren't very receptive to allowing non-employees into the OR.[yes, i know their duties extend beyond the OR])

If anyone shadowed an anesthesiologist, how did you approach him? I don't know anyone in the field.

Thanks.

I have extensive exposure to anesthesiology, as I have worked as an anesthesia technologist as well as a clinical research assistant in anesthesia studies. I have never actually heard of anyone shadowing an anesthesiologist, as there is a lot of down time (i.e., after induction and the surgery is underway, it's pretty much smooth sailing until the end of the surgery). Nonetheless, it is a very interesting field, much involved in physiology and pharmacology. I would suggest volunteering in a hospital O.R. where you could watch surgeries as well as chat with the anesthesiologist. You will learn a lot about surgery and anesthesia while gaining familiarity with the O.R., which is a world unto itself.

flynnt,
I have shadowed an anesthesiologist and I am very interested in Gas. Most of them are super cool and very laid back. If you ask them nicely...they will let you shadow them (when they are working) and take you on tours (like OR hopping) where they present the patient and tell you what you gotta look out for and other pertinent information (they are not working).
