I was just wondering if any of you guys had shadowed an oncologist. I'm set on specializing in it, pediatric oncology to be exact and wanted to know what you guys have experienced b/c I am about to start contacting doctors and ask to shadow them. Thanks! 😀

you successfully used huge font and no punctuation but you were polite enough to capitalize Dude?

Perhaps he's referring to me as being "the funniest troll ever"?...

I am, after all, the Dude...

you know, i've always wondered what the 3 *** stand for in ur avatar....

I shadowed a pediatric oncologist at UCSF for a year and it was an awesome experience. This field is one of the few that allow drs to develop a lasting relationship with the patients. That is because from the day of diagnosis to relapse, most patients see the same doctors for years.

As for the cons, the trainings are long. Residency takes 2 years. Internship/fellowship up to 8 years. Also, a pediatric oncologists often deal with kids who have no concerns about their health. In fact at UCSF, we had one girl who faked having a headache so she could skip school. We did MRI, CT Scan, and other tests, and for months we did not know why she had a headache.

It was supposed to be SDN but they won't let us have those letters or the word "moderator" in there.

haha btw, i've noticed that a bunch of people on sdn don't know how to spell definitely or like to spell it wrong or maybe all of those times that i've seen it spelled incorrectly have been from one or two posters.

I spent a week in a sarcoma wing of a hospital. There were a lot of different types of scans used--PET, MRI, CT, and maybe some others that I didn't pay too much attention to, since this rotation was part of a program and I'm not that into oncology. You may want to study up some on the scans before you go, like how they work and how to read them, plus why is one used instead of another.

I found that there was a lot of patient consulting, and I would think ped onco would involve the usual overbearing parents. The guy I followed didn't wear a labcoat even, just business casual, so that was a little odd. I hardly spoke with him actually and just tagged along here and there, and my disinterest must have been obvious, doh--don't let that happen of course. One thing about onco and especially ped onco--aren't the prognoses often rather depressing, esp for lil kids? How much realistic hope do they have?

Actually, some of the more common types of childhood cancer have relatively good survival odds, and the rate of 5 year survival is increasing very rapidly. Pediatric ALL (The most common type of ped. Leukemia) now has a 85% 5+ survival rate, up from less tha 5% in the 60's.

OMG thank you! I've thought of starting a thread entitled "learn how to spell" and then listing some of the most frequently incorrect words. "Definitely" would start off the list. Don't pre-meds have to take writing classes?

take writing class != learn to write

Worst episode ever.

You are seriously must be one of the biggest dumb f**ks on here. I don't understand how anyone can ever say that. First of all if you didn't want to read it why click on the topic? Second of all it's a simple f**king question that was directed to those WHO HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE IN WHAT I ASKED. If you all must know the reason why I specified what I want to become is for support from at least one damn person. I don't know any of you people but to be honest I have never ever seen such rude people write in anything like this. I thought this forum was made to ask for help and support, this is something you people obviously don't do. I have a lot of reasons for wanting to do oncology, specifically pediatric oncology. I have unfortunately had to watch someone die from this and this is my inspiration. I have had to deal with way too many people discouraging me from this and I see that all you just do the same. Don't waste your time posting stupid comments..please do ME that favor. I am not taking time out of my damn day to have to see this after asking a simple question. You for some reason must have all thought I came off as snotty, or one of those stuck up pre-meds...well I'm not..it just shows you all are. Anyways...ANYONE THAT CAN ANSWER MY QUESTION PLEASE POST IF NOT THEN DON'T POST IN SOMETHING JUST TO BE MEAN OR TO TRY AND SOUND BETTER THAN ME.

THANK U TO ALL THOSE WHO WERE KIND ENOUGH TO RESPOND

P.S. If you have time to start a new thread on people on SDN that can't spell you must obviously be a loser. Seriously who gives a s**t? Ever heard of something called typos????

Ease up dude. It is an honor to have a perfectly respectable thread hijacked, derailed, then rididculed.

i don't think so 👎 ...please do tell how is it an honor??

Whoosa... inhale... exhale. No need for getting too excited. Everyone on this board is stressed out beyond belief. Some of us respond to serious questions (because of the gravity of seemingly everything we do) with a complete lack of attention, courtesy, or **** giving. Take most of what you hear that pisses you off and understand that everyone is making jokes... try to see the humor. It's nothing personal. Others will actually answer your questions; have your serious conversation with them.

Most of all, cut through all of your own stress with a bit of breathing. Learning to handle SDN stress is the first step to handling med school, then internships, then residency, and your whole career. See the humor and inhale... exhale...

-dope-

Well, we could have told you to stop being such a dumb ass noob and conduct a search.

I bet you are so high strung and up tight that if you stuck a lump of coal in the crack of your ass you could create a diamond.

Wow did you think that up all by yourself; or did you find the most obvious cliche ever conceived by mankind and use it in an confused and mangled way? I'm going with the latter... yup... the cliche option.

I had help from a bunch of pre-meds who created an *official* thread then took a vote.

Regardless of overuse, the cliche I used was 100% appropriate and accurate. Besides, it was essentially the same thing you wrote except I didn't feel like talking some pre-med down from an angst-gasm over the internet.
