  1. Pre-Dental
A nearby university hospital has a general dentistry residency program (but not a dental school). I was thinking about contacting the program to ask if they would allow me to shadow. Should I try to shadow through the university residency program (they have general dentist and specialists on staff) or should I just shadow private practice dentists?

It's ok if you plan on practicing only in a gpr program.

Shadow dentists practicing in a private practices. Shadowing at GPR programs would be useful if you want to speak with a recent graduate about dental school.

You know, I really, really like the public setting as opposed to the private setting for shadowing for a few reasons. One, I think those at the hospital (the students) would be much, much more open to answering your questions. I've had the opportunity to work with several fourth year dental students in a community health clinic and those guys love to help. And there are a lot of them. In a private practice, they usually have the head dentist and they are in a rush a lot of the time. Also, in the public setting, you would probably be able to get a hands on experience. They don't have as many regulations and you might notice that these dental students are trained to work alone as opposed to the private practice where the dentist has 4 or 5 assistants at his/her disposal. So yeah, who knows, you might help. And finally, the people at the public practice will probably be more willing to vouch for you. At least in my experience, the dentist in the public practice takes you under their wing and wants you to become a dentist yourself because I guess the supervising dentist wants to see awesome future dentists. Call them up. Ask if you can volunteer. Notice, not shadow, volunteer. And if not, ask to shadow. I'm sure they would be more open than a private practice.

Shadowing at a GPR or other hospital clinic is a great idea. This past semester I shadowed at my state's dental school gpr clinic. It was the best experience I've had shadowing thus far. I've seen so much pathology that I would have not seen in private practice, including some cool prosth stuff. Granted, some days I shadowed there would be no-shows or just routine stuff like fillings all day. I was shadowing residents that were fresh out of dental school and they gave great advice regarding admissions (some were on admissions as students), and were more than happy to answer any questions I had. It's a great way to network. The chief resident actually wrote one of my letters and has become a good friend of mine. However, don't limit your scope of shadowing to just a hospital setting. It's good to see dentists in different settings.
