As I read here on SDN I see that shadowing hours/clinical exposure is paramount for us non-trads. Is it even a remote possibility to start that without being a "pre-med" i.e. taking the freshman level courses? Obviously I want to have as many hours as possible and would like to start sooner rather than later. Will physicians laugh me out of their office since I haven't even remotely proven myself and their time is valuable?

physicians rarely, if ever, ask if you've started your premed classes. the interest and professionalism will rank high above that, although some may ask for a CV to see prior exposure.

I'd recommend starting with some volunteering in healthcare settings. but there's no such thing as too early.
