So, I have a professor who I am in good standing with who's wife is a doctor at a local hospital. I want to ask him if I might be able to get in contact with his wife for possible shadowing experience. Does it seem forward/weird to ask him about this? I feel it's my best shot to get into the shadowing game. I could also wait until I complete this next semester and he would no longer be my professor in case there's any issues with conflict of interest (idk how there would be but you never know). What are your opinions on the matter? Thanks so much, hope everyone is having a lovely Saturday!

Sounds weird, maybe bring up the medical field in office hours and see if he offers anything but don’t ask

Tried to message you, but your profile is private. I personally don’t think this is weird. My wife is a Pharmacist (clinical specialist) and I have had multiple people ask me if they could talk to my wife about her specialty. I am always willing and do not think it’s weird. My wife does not think it is weird either. How do you get places in this world? Connections. You are literally just trying to advance your career. If you know the professor well, I would ask the professor if his wife or any of her colleagues allow students to shadow.

But hey, this is SDN where everything is weird, if you don’t have a 4.0 and a 520+ you won’t get into med school, if you don’t have a 270 on step you’re matching FM, and we’re all doomed.

Have you met his wife? If so maybe you could mention you are thinking of reaching out to her for shadowing opportunities and see how he reacts. But this is weird too! Just don’t!

This is going to be incredibly annoying for your professor to hear this request and very awkward for you if he grants it. Don’t do it and go through the regular channels.

Never had this feeling. Most posts are from average people or people below average trying to reinvent themselves.

Just be slick about it. Meet him in person Be like yea haha wats up doc and if he says how’s it going just say “ahhh I’ve been busy looking for some shadowing opportunities for medical school, and I just keep getting ignored. It’s tough with all the requirements you got to do before applying to med school”.... if he mentions something about his wife then you have the green light

It depends on how accommodating your professor tends to be. I don't think it would be that weird to ask about it.

If you cold call every doctors office in the phone book you will get at least one that will give you a time and place to show up to shadow. I promise. Get off your butt and start dialing. You’ll get 20 nos but eventually a very enthusiastic sure! Don’t bother with hospitals, too much corporate nonsense to waddle through. A lot of private practice docs employee their spouse and family members at the front desk and they can be super friendly and promise things a secretary otherwise wouldn’t.

How well do you know this professor?

Depends how well you know the professor, and if he's stated that his wife is a doctor. Because if you creeped and found out then it's a hell no

Weird. Less weird to cold call and email organizations and doctors. The least weird option would be to actually volunteer or work in a clinical setting where you can get to know some docs and then ask for shadowing opportunities.

Sorry for the late response, I didn't know my account was private I'll go and change that now! But thank you so much for your input I appreciate it!

Haha no no he always tells his class the first day about his wife being a doctor at a local hospital. I know him relatively well, I've taken him for 3 courses so far. Definitely would be weird if I stalked his wife lol

I've had him for 3 courses now and I am comfortable going to his office hours for questions or emailing him. Although I'm not sure if this is good enough to really ask him something like what I posted

“Do you think your wife knows any doctors that would let me shadow them?”

Boom.
This is genuinely the best response thank you! I didn't even think of this!

Excellent advice thank you very much!
