I am going to Texas for 2 weeks to shadow an obgyn on the 11th and I was just wondering for anyone who has done this, if there is anything that I really should need to know (any tips for this specialty). I will be staying at the doctors house and basically following him around his work for the two weeks as well as attending a conference where he will be speaking during the first weekend. I have shadowed a few doctors before, but I've never actually stayed at their house nor shadowed for a straight 2 week period, so just looking for any advice from someone who has done something similar.

this sounds creepy and excessive to me.

^^ touche, why do you wanna stay in his house, mingle with his personal life unless he is your relative.

Stay out of the way and ask questions when appropriate. Otherwise be curtous and say thank you a lot, especially since he's providing hospitality.

No actually it sounds like a very good opportunity to get a first-hand look at the life of a busy physician in a primary care specialty. What is so creepy about it? The OP will have a good experience to talk about in their application and future medical school interviews.

And you do realize that this sort of thing (apprenticing) is how people have been introduced and trained in various trades for centuries. It's just that Chris Hanson has made you so afraid of your own shadow that you'd automatically assume an offer for an opportunity like this means you might get touched in your special places while sleeping.

i said it sounds creepy to ME. not to cbrons.

I gotta agree with the OP and cbrons. This sounds like an awesome opportunity. OP will get more shadow hours in those two weeks than many of us will have altogether. Way to go.

This doctor came to my ranch a few months ago for a repro seminar for alpacas and part of the seminar included a hands-on learning of trans-rectal ultrasound for repro purposes. Anyways he was impressed with my knowledge in the field and once he found out I was trying to get into medical school he offered to let me shadow him in Texas and stay at his house as well. So that is why I am staying at his house.

Awesome. Did he do the DO/DVM?

No, he just wanted to be able to check pregnancies on his own animals periodically by himself without needing to have a vet come in and without worrying about hurting the animal.

Do you just happen to be an attractive female? Just saying....

I guess my initial gut reaction was that it was a slightly odd situation, though maybe he's just that open, friendly, and it'll be an incredible experience. Certainly will give you a decent glimpse into everyday life of a physician.

3 to 1 the OP is smoking hot

lol.

anyway in response to OP,
-ask questions
-show interest in the field! even if you don't play to go into that field, just say undecided.
-offer to do stuff. ie. take a history etc, although pre-meds usually wouldn't do this yet but it doesn't hurt to offer. If you want to prepare for when he does actually let you take a history, you can find a template and make a few copies and just go by that, really easy to do. (if you want an actual template, feel free to PM me, im an M4 just finished my ob/gyn rotation)
-if you actually did something more than just shadow, you would be able to set yourself apart from others when you write about the experience, that you were actually doing stuff that a med student would be doing.
-remember, if the experience went well you can always ask for a letter of rec
