Hey so I have 48 hours of shadowing in high school ( last few months of senior year) and then 26 hours during the last three years of college. Can I count it on the application or no? I never added the shadowing in my undergrad application so could I add it to the med app? Are there any problems with it

I’m pretty sure the consensus is to not use anything from high school unless it’s one specific activity you have been doing continuously since high school (ex: a sport)

why is it that high school shadowing doesn’t count? Like I am see why a different activity like robotics during high school or high school chess club wouldn’t count. But I did the shadowing a few months before college began and no one has given me a good reason why high school shadowing shouldn’t count aside from it was during high school.

I don't think adcoms will mind if you put significant high school experiences on your app. Best to consult the expert though -

@Goro ?

I would include it. Not as a separate entry but all under shadowing. You can list the dates so it should be obvious that you did it in HS then again in college. It's not as though the experience you got from shadowing back then just disappears because you were in HS versus college.

That definitely makes sense! If you have a good amount of shadowing from college, it wouldn’t necessarily hurt to have the shadowing from high school as well all in the same entry 🙂

High schools volunteering is OK IF they are carried through into college years. Otherwise, what happens in high school remains in high school.
I signed up for a general shadowing program in high school and have remained there since. But I shadowed a specific doctor then (late senior year of high school to summer). So yes or no? If no can I count the summer hours

How would I put my shadowing hours then also?

At the same shadowing program? Put all the hours in the same shadowing experience on your amcas
