Hey everyone,
So I recently got a laboratory position st a hospital where I work very closely with Pathologists and doctors. Before getting this job I was trying to find a doctor to shadow but since I work with a Pathologist would it be a good idea to go ahead and shadow them. Unfortunately pathologists do not Interact with patients very much but I can already see what work they do on a daily basis, and I am kind of already shadowing them in a way. Would this count as shadowing experience ?

Thank you,

In my opinion I would try to find something outside of exactly where you work, and maybe they could put you in contact with a few physicians around the hospital so you could see physician-patient interaction

Working with a pathologist would probably carry more weight with admissions committees than shadowing one. With this in mind, list this as a work experience. In regards to shadowing doctors, see if you can shadow a doctor who works closely with patients. Although you may learn a thing or two, "shadowing" really isn't that big of a deal since it (usually) takes little time and effort. I'd recommend a long-term volunteer commitment or a part-time job where you can work directly with physicians and patients. Clinical exposure is key.

Ideally, different. Broaden your horizon and strengthen your network.

Contact a school in the area and ask them about shadowing and if they have any sugggestions.

Use shadowing websites. I forget what it’s called but there is one for DOs.

Help yourself grow by increasing your understanding of healthcare and a multitude of specialties.

Work, MCAT, school, volunteer, shadow, and family, it’s all been done before in parallel. You got this.

Good luck.

So I too work in the lab at an academic medical center. I talked to the pathology director and asked if he could offer any shadowing opportunities. He ended up introducing me to a hospitalist to shadow and let me observe multiple things such as autopsies and surg-path slide examinations with the pathology residents. I would say make friends with some of the doctors and then see what opportunities they can provide.
