Shadowing physicians

Is there a specific amount of hours I should complete when shadowing various physicians? I was thinking if I shadowed each at least 4-5 days that would be a good amount of time or is that overkill? And how do I approach the subject of he/she poetentially writing a recommendation for med school after the shadowing is completed?
