Shadowing Procedure

So I thought there should be a thread on the "unofficial" guidelines for shadowing....how you should dress, interact, etc. when shadowing. I think if people could give their insight/ advice it would be helpful for anyone shadowing, including myself 👍.

From my experience, you basically just dress-up as a doctor would. Casual slacks (could be kakis), a dress shirt, tie, and dress shoes.

I don't think most doctors care whether or not you wear a tie.

IDK if this is correct. From my experience, most of the doctors I have shadowed simply introduced me as a "student" to patients (probably to keep them at ease). If I was not dressed at least as well as the residents/medical students on the team, I think it would've made a bit worse of an impression.

i was thinking a long sleeve shirt tucked in, slacks and some sperrys.....aside from clothing whats considered good shadowing etiquette?

ask questions when you're ASKED if you have questions, or between patients/etc. Its a privelege to be allowed in the patient room. THANK the patient for the opportunity.

thanks I went today and the Dr. actually asked me to wear a tie the next time I came to the clinic.

ah this is so funny because i just shadowed a doc today, who requested prior to my arrival to wear a shirt and tie. i actually wore a jacket too, which impressed him. mah moms always said it's better to overdress than underdress, especially for occasions like this
