Hello, everyone!

Just had a quick question. I know from what I've read that you're not really supposed to include experiences on your application from prior to college. That said I went through some awesome experiences with Shadowing before coming into college. This included seeing a great deal of orthopedic and cardio-thoracic surgeries and I would hate for that not to be shared especially since it was a big factor in helping me know medicine was right for me. All in all it totaled to be about 60 hours worth. Would it be bad for me to include this since it was pre college? Or since this is pretty significant is it okay?

It's not really very noteworthy IMO, but you could discuss it in your essays or lump it together with your other college shadowing experiences to save space (you only get 15 spots for ECs, from what I remember). Chances are you'll have better things to put on your app by the time you apply.

This.

I had one activity dedicated to "Shadowing Experiences" and listed all relevant experiences in the description.

All in all though, it is okay to include it with my current shadowing? I wasn't planning on putting it in a separate EC space I just wasn't sure if it would be frowned upon since it happened before college.

I had a chance in high school to view an open heart surgery, though I didn't. I can't remember why I elected to opt out, but I can safely say that if I had seen it, I wouldn't hesitate to put it on my app. It's a really rare thing to see, ya know?

No it's not. Even transplant surgery is not all that difficult to shadow, though as a pre-med it would be pretty rare to get to hop on the plane to retrieve the organ.

I mean yea, it may not be a rare occurrence but it is pretty significant and can help give you an idea of what you want to do. Anyhow, thanks for answering my question everyone. I'll be sure to include it all as one lumped experience
