I thought shadowing was like volunteering where you have a deal with the doctor to come a few hours each week and around 30-50hrs is good but found out today that my friend shadowed two doctors for 4 days straight over break and accumulated ~30 hrs.

Is it better to shadow a few hrs each week then go all out for a few days and is there anyway for med schools to tell the difference? (Question that says how many days shadowed) I am shadowing a neurologist right now for about 3 hrs a week but it would work better for me to have a free day open and shadow her for 8 hours and do that a few times.

Thank you

Either way of accumulating shadowing hours is equally legitimate. Which way you choose should depend on what works best for both your schedule and that of the physician who has agreed that you can follow along.

When you list your shadowing (usually under "Other") you can list each doc you shadowed, specialty, and date span, with total hours, and then some contact information if not otherwise listed. At the end of the narrative, give a grand total of hours.

Since we're on this subject, I am an incoming freshman this summer and plan on going to med school, what would you guys recommend as far as volunteer work, shadowing, clinical experience, etc.?

Theres a whole host of things you can do PMRsoon, personally I did some volunteering overseas to add something different to my applications, speant time in Tanzania with a pre-med company called GapMedics.com . Not for everyone as there are costs involved but it was amazing and cant wait to go back when i qualify.
