how recent do your shadowing hours have to be? mine are about 3 years old and i was just wondering if that will be frowned upon if i don't have any recent hours?

How many do you have? I don't think it should be a problem if you have a sufficient amount.

is shadowing absolutely necessary?
I did some various volunteering but never did any sort of shadowing so far..

no worries. and yeah, shadowing is really really recommended

i made this thread bc my shadowing is from 3 years ago, and i honestly don't have time for it b/w classes and research

I think you're fine and don't have to shadow.
Shadowing is not like taking the DAT. It showed you were interested in dentistry three years ago and because you're applying to dental schools soon, you're still interested in dentistry now 🙂

Agreed with preDent that shadowing is highly recommended and even required by some schools. It's one way how schools assess your interest in the profession.

I talked to a Doctor a while ago who told me that in his interview they asked him about something he did while he was 13 years old (participated in marathons or sth)....the entire interview was him talking about his experience and the interviewers were super interested. He told me that something he did as a kid literally got him in to medicine (i guess the same applies to dentistry). So I don't think when you do it is a important as what you do. They want to know that they are accepting someone who didn't cram all their EC's and volunteer into the summer before applications...but rather accepting someone who ALWAYS was an all around person.

Most schools require 50 to 100 hours. So anything over 100 hours is fine.
