I had only 10 hours total and was told that I need to put in more hours. I just wonder how you go about setting this up.
If the doctor has his own office you just call and ask right?
Can you shadow doctors who work in hospitals? This is what I prefer but I am not sure they allow non-medical personnel walking around in the hospital.

Yes, you can shadow doctors that work in hospitals. I'd recommend trying to find an EM physician to shadow. Additionally try to find a surgeon or two to shadow. You really just have to hit the phones/ call in any connections you have. Maybe the pre-health advising office at your university could help you out.

You can shadow anybody, but it's easier to ask MDs/DOs you know in your current clinical activities.

Part of the problem is that many doctors are unwilling to let a student shadow who they have no relationship with.

You'll have a much higher response rate (doctors responding and saying yes) if they know you or your family in some way. Try asking your parents for any family friends who are doctors, or are nurses (and can ask a doctor they work under).

Also, if you attend a church, synagogue, temple, etc., try asking around there. Doctors are often much more accepting when people ask through a setting such as that.

Good luck!
