Shadowing Time?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is no "right" answer to your question, but a good amount of shadowing would be 100 hours divided across several specialities. Admission committees like to see that you've shadowed multiple specialities (e.g., ~30 hours with 3 different physicians). The exact number of hours isn't too important. People who shadow one physician for 200+ hours are wasting time that could be better spent elsewhere IMO.

So far I have 120 hours over 5 doctors (6 specialties as one doc did two things). I intended to stop searching for doctors once I hit 80 hours and a primary care doctor, but then all the doctors I contacted who I wrote off as never going to respond to me all decided they were going to contact me and agree. So I'm going to finish off my time with the family doctor, shadow one other guy because I am curious about his area, and continue the once in a blue moon shadowing with a surgeon.

I think I am moving into overkill at this point.

I'd say ~100 should be good if you've spread it over a few drs. Any more than that and you're pretty much wasting time b/c you've seen what it's like, but you're not going to learn much more by sticking around lots longer.

I had about 10 hours of official shadowing.

You need enough to know what you're getting into and being able to articulate exactly why you want to be a doctor.

I only had 20 or so, which made me very nervous. But it ended up being enough.

OH. That's exactly what I did. The doctor I was shadowing seemed angry though. I have no clue why 🙄
Well, IMHO, you'll get to understand it if you go ahead and dare to request a reference letter from that doc.

If this is the way you roll, then watch your steps from ground zero (pre-med) to the ultimate destination of becoming an attending doc, and beyond. It takes a lot of humiliation and maturity in this far away town. Sooner or later they're gonna getch'a; and, I wish, it is gonna be that much of a fun for you again. Just drop a line for us to read here after that moment, please.

Love the humanity, show sincere respect to everyone. First learn this.

Yeah, my s*** doesn't smell either. Together we must lead these uneducated masses in what it really means to be a doctor. Because you're pre-med, and I'm MS0, so we clearly know what we're talking about... 🙄 (That's a sarcastic smiley, for future reference.)

Hey poster above me, I think he was making a joke.

Yeah I was about to say that as well. He probably missed the previous posts where they were trying to be funny. Nobody is dumb enough to just bail out on the dr without saying bye or anything.

You could smell it in your spare times. My family has enough number of doctors. Thus, I know at least what I am talking about.

Besides, if one declares himself/herself a (potential) doctor, people expect some consistently positive behavior from him/her, even at such public lists like SDN.

One who doesn't respect humanity at all is suspected about doing harm on patients, as well. And, he/she would be caught at some point (fired, or banned from practice.) For instance, when I search for a doctor before visiting his/her office, I query his/her records through my insurance company's website to see if this doc has ever been charged on a case. I always select the ones who have the purest records so far.

Life is a mirror. One day you're gonna see your ugly face for a pay off (this is to say that keep your sarcastic face for yourself, for future reference 😉.)

Wow. Just wow.

Nah. You don't know what you're talking about. You did manage to get that pole of arrogance situated nicely up your a** though. Family heirloom? Good luck getting it out.

Thank god for anonymity. Otherwise, all of us might have to start pretending we're going into the seminary. Because doctors aren't people. They like everything and everyone...

If life were a mirror, people would get what they give. That's rarely the case. Also, I don't know what this means: "One day you're gonna see your ugly face for a pay off." Your further explanation of "this is to say that keep your sarcastic face for yourself, for future reference," does nothing to clear it up. In fact, it only makes your statement more inane.

You can't make fun of him, he has doctors in his family! Respect the royalty!

Sounds like those doctors should have married UP instead of DOWN (see this thread)...maybe then the OP would stand a decent chance 😉

I'm neither Paki nor Indian. Further, there's no problem being a Paki or Indian.

You're so being carried away with your petty sarcasm(s) while now trying to high five chrisoc13.

Sure, go ahead and learn respecting people.

Dude, pull the stethoscope out your a** and chill. Yes, we are sarcastic, we are aware of this so there is no need to keep reminding the ppl on here. If you don't like it either ignore it or leave, I seriously doubt your overly pompous threads are going to change anyone's demeaner.

We understand you think you are better than us all, and, well, you ain't 😀

Well, sure he is. Speak for yourself. It's obvious he's better than all of us, because he has doctors in his family... well, most of us... I have doctors in my family, too, so I guess I'm spared from that statement! 🙄

So long, sucker...

Well I thought I was spared because I have doctors in my family as well, but then I realized they use sarcasm so they must not respect people and therefore are not really doctors. Crap. Now I'm screwed.

Then, it clearly proves your legacy...the pal of the sucker!

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

I love it when people don't get sarcasm, and even they do find that they are so high and mighty as to be offended by it...whew, this post made my day.
