Hi all,

Just graduated High School about 3 weeks ago and will be attending a large state university in fall. I am very excited to begin my pre-med journey, but also aware of what a time commitment it is. I have some time now, so I was hoping to get a few questions answered.

Regarding shadowing - I have some shadowing lined up this summer. Will these hours count when applying to medical school? I will be shadowing a few M.D.'s at a local hospital and am hoping to get a few hours in so I am not so crunched for time later on.

For volunteering, does volunteering with seniors at a local senior center count as any form of clinical exposure? I figure not, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I also have 200+ hours invested throughout high school into a non-profit I founded, which I will continue working with this summer and into my college years. Do these hours from high school rollover when putting hours onto the med school application?

I appreciate any and all help. Thanks!

I agree with the above poster.

Any experiences that you obtain the summer after high school is fair game for medical school app. However, just keep in mind that you should be involved throughout undergrad so make sure you have a wide array of experiences.

Oh, absolutely. I just want to get maybe like 30 or so hours now so I'm not tearing my hair out later on trying to get it right before I apply to med school.

I appreciate all the answers!

This is way in the future, but maybe make a note of it somewhere on your volunteer log so you don't forget: When counting high school volunteer hours on your AMCAS app it's best to separate your 200 HS hours from those in college using the repeated feature.
