Shadowing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm getting to shadow an ob/gyn because my mom visited him. It's better to have some line of connected, however thin, to link you to the doctor. Are there any other students on your campus who are currently shadowing? If so, ask them if the doctor would like to take you on as well. Often, when you email/call/visit an office, it is not the doctor you will be contacting, it will be a receptionist or office manager who has no clue what you want or they aren't super excited about having a premed kid running around their work space. What I mean is, your message may never even reach the actual doctor. Like I said, ask around. If that doesn't work, see if your advisement department has a list of doctors who have been receptive to students in the past.

Thanks

All I really get is academic advising here, really, so no pre-med committee or resources.... but it's something I could look into. Maybe my adviser may know something.

Can't really do much in terms of shadowing with my own doctors because conflict of interest and all.

Talk to your science professors maybe? They may have doctor friends they could put you in contact with. Or get in touch with a doctor that your friend goes to. You may have to go through a few people, but it will be a relief when you finally start!

Academic medical centers/hospitals affiliated with med schools can be your best friend in setting up shadowing. When I set up shadowing they had a formal protocol in place that made it possible (albeit not easy) to shadow a multitude of physicians. If you run into any bureaucratic red tape, be polite but see if there is a way to work past it.
