I'm a college freshman and I just shadowed a doctor in the ER all Sunday. When I came, he didn't tell me what I could do and went on the internet and watched the Bills game. His nurses and resident students there completely ignored me. Fortunately, a very nice 4th year med student told me that I could shadow her and I ended up doing so. Is this normal for a shadowing experience?? 😕

Dang! I would love to have a pre-meddie follow me around! 😛
That would be cool! No, I think you got the shaft...or it was a REALLY slow day in the ER

Mossjoh 😳

obviously this person was not interested in you... Many physicians are NOT pleased with shadows (the closer you get to applying, the more people are interested in you, by the way). The trick is to get set up with somoene who wants to let you see things.... not someone you're "assigned" to.

no, that's not normal. it's actually rather cruel that the ER doctor would leave you stranded in that environment (which can be intimidating for anyone, especially for a pre-med with no hospital experience). on the bright side, you got to follow an M4... it's better because they do things the "right" (i.e., textbook) way anyway (compared to the numerous shortcuts that doctors will sometimes take). maybe you should find someone new?

Yeah, I'm going to shadow another physician who actually wants me to be there. Thanks!!!!!!!! 🙂
