My brother in-law works as a surgical technician with a private practice gastro-intestinal surgeon. I got him to talk to the doctor for me and the doctor agreed to let me shadow him.

Anyway, my question is whether or not there is a benefit/disadvantage to shadowing a private practice versus a non private practice doctor? Or does this even make a difference?

The main point of shadowing and medical volunteering is to show that you have worked to gain experience and understanding in medicine, to show that you know what you're getting yourself into. It won't matter who you shadow (unless the person is a super famous doc and you get a rec letter from her). I would say definitely take advantage of this opportunity and don't worry about it being in private practice - that shouldn't make one iota of difference.

Doesn't really matter. Private practice docs (if they like you) might be able to let you watch more stuff (because of hospital regulations ... depends how high up the chain the particular doctor you are working with is and how evil the scrub nurses are). I'd consider it an advantage (more one-on-one time with the doc, no medical students / residents).
