I will be shadowing a surgeon and have an option to also shadow a PA, I was wondering what are some good questions to ask while shadowing to gain the best experience I can

Here are a few questions I would ask:

*Why did you go into medicine in the first place?
*Do you regret anything about your career path?
*What's your favorite part about practicing medicine? Least favorite?
*How much time do you have outside of work?
*If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose medicine?

These are some tough questions, so I wouldn't ask them all at once! And definitely shadow the PA too. Ask the same questions of his/her profession and lifestyle. A lot of people are finding that you can do many of the cool things an MD does by being a PA, with a high salary and better lifestyle (and two years of school compared to four). You need to make sure you know for sure that you want to be an MD and not a PA, and why! Shadowing a PA is a great opportunity to find this out.

Thank you! I wanted to shadow both to get an understanding of both fields. I was fortunate that the PA is in the same surgical office. I appreciate your response

Why dont you ask yourself, first, what is it that you want to know about being a doctor? what are you unsure of?

If you want the best experience, you should be thinking of questions on your own. What is important to me may not necessarily be important to you.

You're going to be spending time with someone that has already taken the path you want to set foot on! You should be able to think of questions yourself!

I would also go in with a basic understanding of the anatomy that the surgeon focuses on, as well as common procedures done by his/her specialty. In my experience, the doctors/PA seem to be more eager to teach you something if you ask relevant questions, rather than obviously having no understanding of what the heck you're seeing (I've definitely made this mistake).
