Shelf exams at LECOM

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if LECOM administers shelf exams during the 1st and 2nd year. If so, which shelf exams are they? Thank you!😀

Tex is correct. From what I understand (about LECOM-B, at least) the PBL exams are given throughout the 1st and 2nd years and are board format questions that address the learning issues you covered in PBL.

Not sure about LECOM-E's lecture pathway or ISP.

Shelf exams are taken at the end of each rotation 3rd and 4th year.

FYI, there are shelf exams for basic sciences from the NBME for MS I and MS II, however, I don't think many if any osteopathic schools administer them. There was some talk of administering the comprehensive NBME anatomy shelf at TUNCOM but that didn't go through. I'm not sure how many allo schools administer them but they do.

We take the NBME comprehensive shelf after exams are over 2nd year-- not for a grade, just to look at weaknesses that may exist since we have about a month of formal board review afterwards. Don't know if Erie does the same.

But do the shelf exams during the 2nd year at erie count towards your final grade or are they there just for practice?

There are shelf exams and then there are shelf exams. The NBME shelf exams (what MD students refer to as the shelfs) are third year end of rotation NATIONAL examinations. These are shelf exams. Some rotations and some schools have their own pre and or post exams particular to their school or rotation, but they are not national exams. The only reason I know this is because our Dean here at TCOM went thru all this and made a point of it to our third year class. We take NBME shelfs here at TCOM (Very Painful I might add)

Also the NBME has a (Comprehensive Basic Science Exam) again a national exam, which can be administered at the end of the first or second year.

Basically, when people talk about "shelf's", on a national basis, it is an exam with Thousands of students taking this test, and real national validity.

We took the NBME shelf for anatomy. We also scored higher than the naional average compared to the allopathic students👍.

We do take the NBME shelf exams at LECOM-E. During the first year you will take the Anatomy and Basic science shelf exams. Second year you will taken a 200 question NBME mock USMLE the week before Christmas.

What happens at Lecom Erie:

You don't get any "shelf" exams during your first or second year. Shelf exams are taken in your clinical years after each CORE rotation (Peds, IM, OB, Surg, FP, Psych). This is pretty much the standard for all allopathic and some osteopathic schools. At LECOM-erie, you are now required to take NBME Shelf exams during your 3rd year in the following disciplines : OB/Gyn, Peds, IM, and Surgery. (This is how it presently is). LECOM-B 3rd years have to take these exams as well (except the Exam Master ones, I think). FP and Psych are given using Exam Master, LECOM's own exams that resemble the NBME shelves. If you fail an Exam Master in FP or psych, you will then be required to retake it, but it will be the NBME Shelf.

The only legit board-type practice exam LECOM erie gives in your first two years, is at the end of your first semester during 2nd year. It's a Kaplan mock-board to help identify your weaknesses and guide your board studying. I'm not sure if they are still using Kaplan, last I heard they weren't doing it this year so they may have opted for another mock-board exam through another company. After this, LECOM administers faculty derived mock board exams to help you practice for the boards.

You are indeed wrong. Lecom-B's previous classes took those 4. This year there will be either 5 or all 6 instead of just those four. They just haven't made up their minds yet.

We also take the NBME comprehensive basic sciences next Friday.

I corrected myself before re-posting there, spark plug. I forgot that I've seen FLECOMers up in Erie taking the exams this past year. 😉 I know the current 3rd years don't take the Exam Master FP and Psych tests like they do in erie, but not sure what they are going to do about it for future ref. I'm glad to hear that LECOM has invested in giving you guys the NBME basic science test instead of Kaplan or their own made-up stuff, I think it's a better representation of board questions.

Oh, we took one Kaplan already, last semester, and we also will take 3 from the professors and another Kaplan test before board review is over. They bought us 3 months of Q-bank, too, so we'll be testing our little buns off for a while yet.

Correct. There are indeed NBME shelf exams for the basic sciences. I have to take a NBME comprehensive shelf exam in addition to my regular cummulative final (a total of 8 hrs, 4 for each) at the end of my first year. Fun times.

We took it during the last week of anatomy and it was worth about 10% of our grade, even though the document that the proctor was required (by NBME) to read to us clearly stated that the exam was not to be adminstered for any kind of credit or grade.

At SOMA, we take NBME generated basic science exams online for each system. According to our administration there are very few MD or DO schools that do this.
