I have been offered an interview at the Ashburn campus, and I was wondering if anyone else has been invited, and if anyone knows anything about this particular situation? 😕

Hey RX,

Shenandoah asked me if I would be interested in going to the Ashburn campus for my P1 and then do P2 and P3 in Winchester, then go back to Northern VA (where I am from) to do my P4 rotations.

I was definitely interested so the lady sent my information to the George Washington Univ coordinator, since it is a joint program between SU and GW. Last week, the GW coordinator emailed me and I called to talk to him on the phone. He said that I would need to apply to GW. If I get accepted, I would do junior and senior undergraduate years there and graduate with a BS in Pharmacogenomics. Then, my senior year would also count as my P1 year at Shenandoah BUT I would still have to reapply thru PharmCAS and if I get accepted, I would go to Shenandoah as a P2 student. Now I'm not sure if that's your situation or not but that's what I was told. So that means I would spend 2 years at GW then 3 more years at SU for a total of 5 years.

I was very upfront with the GW coordinator. I told him that I've already had an interview with VCU and now waiting on my acceptance letter. I told him that I would consider applying to GW only if I don't get into a Pharmacy program for Fall 2006 b/c I would rather enter Fall 2006 and graduate in 2010 than to do an extra year of undergraduate work and then graduate in 2011.

I would call SU and double check on that though, it might be different for you.

Thank you. I am going to write Dr. Kirkpatrick and ask for details, because I already have a BA.

Thanks, Glycerin!
I had not heard anything about this and so I didn't think about doing a search...now I know what I need to know... 🙂

RX,

I would still contact Dr. Kirkpatrick just to make sure. They might put you there in Ashburn as a P1 student and not make you do the junior year. Just double check on that.

I did, and she said that I would not have to do the junior year. I would be a P1. 🙂

Hi RX,

I just got off the phone with Dr. Kirkpatrick. I told her that I would like to go straight to Ashburn as a P1 student and not as a junior undergraduate so she told me that she will request for my file back from Dr. O'Brien and then email me sometime next week. She said there were about 5-6 applications that looked strong but did not have the Bachelor's degree so they were sent over to GW....apparently that was my situation. Honestly, I could finish my BS in Biology in 1 more year but then if I can get admitted now w/o the BS then all the better b/c by the time I get my PharmD, the BS won't matter anymore anyway. The BS would only help me get into a PharmD program but since both VCU and SU are considering me now, I'd rather start Fall 2006.

Worse case scenario, if I don't get accepted anywhere for this coming Fall, then I will just finish my Biology degree at the school I'm currently at since I only have 5 more classes to take, no sense in going back to being a junior, right? 🙂

So will you be attending SU in the fall then? 🙂
Whoops, jumped the gun...I will be interviewing on Wed., but if all goes well, then you can count me in for Shenandoah 😀 .

Did those of you getting interviews for the joint program at GW actually apply for that program? I wonder if SU is just beginning to really want their PharmD students to have a prior bachelors...hmmm. Interesting.
Where is Ashburn?

I applied for the Pharm D program at Shenandoah. I already have a degree. It's an interesting question, though.
Ashburn is basically a suburb of DC, or so it seems... 🙂

Perhaps it is also a case of Shenandoah trying to lobby for some of that Norther VA real estate. MCV/VCU is supposedly going to start a satellite program in N. VA and use INOVA Fairfax HOspital in Falls, Church as the main practice site for rotations. Given so many of the students who attend Shenandoah or VCU are from the N. VA. area it appears that both schools are trying to lobby to have practice sites in the area. The relationship w/ GW and Shenandoah appears to be initiate from their relationship on emergency preparedness issues and GW's various locations in N.VA. Nevermind GW's new state of the art hospital in NW DC that would also provide an additional oppurtunity as a practice site for pharmacy students (since most of the Howard students tend to go to either Georgetown, Providence, or stay at Howard's hospital). It'll be interesting to see how things work out.

Yes, I know for a fact that VCU/MCV is beginning this new thing where Pharmacy (and Medical) students can choose to do their 3rd and 4th years in INOVA Fairfax, VA via teleconferencing. I am from Fairfax myself so when I filled out the supplemental application for VCU before my interview, I did show interest in doing the P3 and P4 years in Fairfax.

As far as I know, there are only 4 Pharmacy schools in VA (Shenandoah, VCU, Hampton, and Univ of Appalachia) and none of these schools are in Northern VA so it's nice that they are opening satellite campuses here. 🙂
