Shenandoah University Application Thread

pick a day and a time, then the interview is just for that half hour - you don't stay for the whole day. After the interview, you will get a brief tour from your student interviewer, then you will have the opportunity to sit in on a class. Once Cindy drops you off at the class, you can stay for as long or short as you'd like. Everyone will know what you're there for (since you're dressed up) and really don't give you a second look, so it's no big deal. I posted my interview stuff in the interview feedback section. Good luck, and I hope to see you on August 15th!! (mandatory orientation!!)

How is the area around Shenandoah? Is it like rural or urban? Just trying to see how it compares to VCU's campus...

Polar opposite of VCU. I lived in Richmond for over 10 years, and while VCU is VERY urban in the middle of the city, Winchester is VERY rural - farm/agriculture area. Not sure about any "night life" in Winchester as I am married w/ 2 kids, but I certainly remember the night life in Shockoe Bottom in Richmond! Guess it depends on what you're looking for. 🙂

i got a request for a background check too

I believe tuition is $27,500/year after you factor in the mandatory computer leasing fee of $500/semester.

For those of you who were accepted, did you receive a request for a criminal background check before you accepted their admission offer? I got an email saying I was accepted to Shenandoah three days after my interview, and then 3 weeks later I got a "conditional acceptance" email requesting a background check. I'm wondering whether the request was from the other school I applied to....

Thanks guys...I called Cindy and she's looking into why I haven't gotten one yet.

So far Shenandoah has been the best interviewing experience! They are very friendly and prompt in responding. I interviewed on Mar 1 and received my acceptance today, only 2 days later!

Did they email you letting you know that you've been accepted?

Yes, I got an email from Cindy and received an acceptance package within 2 weeks.

Wow, only 2 days! I interviewed on Monday, 3/21 and still haven't heard anything. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I was going to wait until next week and give them a chance to make a decision, but yeah I will definitely email her next week if I don't hear anything, she is very helpful. Will you be attending Shenandoah in the fall? I see you also interviewed at Notre Dame and was just curious

My #1 choice is UMB for which i am waitlisted. If I don't get into UMB then Shenandoah will be my next choice school w/o any regrets 🙂 - how about you?

VCU is my top choice, but Shenandoah is a great school and I would be happy there too! About Notre Dame, after you received the email saying you've been accepted, did you also get an email for a background check request? I just got that email and I don't know what school it is from!! Good luck getting into UMB! I heard that mostly everyone who gets waitlisted usually gets in so keep your hopes high!

Yes, I got the background check email after Notre Dame acceptance. Thank you and good luck to you too with VCU!

VCU was my top choice too, but after doing interviews at both schools I realized Shenandoah was a much, much better fit for me. Plus, I did my undergrad in Richmond, so I'm a little over it 🙂

Did you ever hear back from VCU? I interviewed there on 2/12/11 and haven't heard anything back, they keep saying that files are still under review. I interviewed at Shenandoah on 3/21/11 and got accepted yesterday.. I like both schools alot so it's going to be a tough decision if I get into VCU as well..

I had interviewed in October, but withdrew my application after I decided to go to Shenandoah. From what I've heard from Dean Reinders directly is that if the admissions committee wants to, they will keep putting your file on "hold" till they review all applicants, or wait until fall grades are in, stuff like that.

I thought it would be a tough choice for me as well, but once I interviewed and did my tour at Shenandoah I realized they were really different schools, especially for me.

Good luck, and don't worry!

Thanks! Yeah, I think I will be happy at either school, so I'm glad I got accepted into Shenandoah and know that no matter what I will be a pharmacy student in the fall. I interviewed at VCU on 2/12/11 and when I called the admissions office, they said they were still interviewing candidates and that our files are still under review. I guess they won't make any final decisions until they have finished interviewing everyone.... I just hate waiting in suspense for so long!

Yay! I finally got an interview for this school! I will be interviewing in Ashburn. Any recommendations for cheap hotels?

do they need a good PCAT score, BS degree and volunteer work??
I am from CA and I plan to apply to this school next year?? Is that possible??

I think they want well-rounded candidates... let's just say my PCAT was pretty bad, I don't have a Bachelor's because I got accepted into pharmacy school for the fall 2011 and there is really no need for me to obtain my degree since I've completed all but one of the pre-reqs (I am taking the last one this summer). Shenandoah looks at your application as a whole I believe... if they stressed PCAT scores, then I definitely wouldn't have been accepted. Just show that you're interested by keeping in touch with the adcom and you will be fine. Just be yourself, if you have the passion for pharmacy and they can see that, then I think you are good to go. How are your grades/GPA?

now i have 3.5 GPA....I plan to take PCAT on August and I completed all of the requirements....what are your stats that helped you to get accepted??

Hi guys, I submitted my application the last day and all I have received so far is an email from Shenandoah saying "Thank you for your recent application to Shenandoah University’s Doctor of Pharmacy program. I appreciate your interest in our program and look forward to helping you through the application process. If you have any questions in the interim, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Admissions at 800-432-2266"
that was back in March 10th. I still havent heard anything else, for those of you who got interviewed in March, what date did you submit the application?
I am worried because my PCAT scored was not impressive at all but have a 3.9 GPA and I volunteered and shadow a Pharmacist....
I called Cindy WItty today, but got her voicemail.. Any suggestions.. or do you guys think they are done interviewing?

I don't believe they are done interviewing - a classmate of mine is having her interview today. When I call Cindy, I usually get her voicemail too. But, she usually calls back within a few hours. I would probably also send her an e-mail as sometimes that will get a response faster.

I wouldn't worry about your PCAT score too much - it seems to me that they are looking for well rounded applicants rather than just great test takers. Granted, having a higher score helps, but the one classmate who's having her interview today got a 70 on the PCAT, and another classmate who's already been accepted with me got a 45,45, 60 the 3 times she took it. Don't give up hope, and keep on calling until you hear back. Good luck!!

I got the invitation today for next week! I am super nervous. Any good advice for those of you who have already been through it? Anything would help

Don't be nervous! The interview is so laid back... Cindy meets you in the lobby and gives you a tour of the school and then drops you off with a faculty member and a pharmacy student (I had 2 faculty members interview me because the student had a test that day). Then you sit down with them for like 30 minutes and you basically get to tell them about yourself and why you want to do pharmacy. It's very relaxed and the questions they ask are not unusual or anything. Just be yourself, they are looking for a well-rounded person with confidence in who they are (from what I've seen). Also, they people who interview you know nothing about you (meaning its a closed-file interview)... so don't worry if you have a bad grade on your transcript or your pcat scores aren't great, THEY DON'T KNOW so don't bring it up lol. So after the interview you have the opportunity to sit in with a class if you want. I chose not to because I am out of state and had a class later that night.

3.5 GPA, still have 1 pre-req to complete over this summer (Orgo. II), and my PCAT score was horrible: 33 in oct. and 51 in jan.(ahh i know). I was determined to get into pharmacy school, its my passion.. I just keep my hopes high and kept in touch with the schools that I applied to. I explained that I really am not the best standardized test taker but I know that I can succeed in pharmacy school.. obviously it worked because i've been accepted to 2/5 schools i applied to so far (still waiting on another that I interviewed at). You'll be fine!

Congratulations on your acceptance! I have been studying Shenandoah for over a year and it seems to me they require a fairly high PCAT. I think an 80 or more is very competitive and one might get in with a 70, however the curriculum is stringent.

Does anyone know if the Ashburn offers P1 and P2, and when are they thinking of offering the 4 years there?

I believe that as of this year, they offer the whole curriculum there.

C/O 2014 will be the first class to go all 4 years in Ashburn 🙂

does anyone know of any good housing options for rent in the area (apts, condos, townhomes)? i don't mind driving like 15-20 mins to school.. i'd actually rather live near like a shopping center with restaurants around, that kind of thing. anyone who is familiar with the area please let me know!!

I'm not familiar with that side of town, but Cindy is posting housing opportunities on the SU-Class of 2015 facebook page. Some are looking for roommates, some have townhouses to rent.

congratulations on getting into umb! i got accepted to the winchester campus. and as for vcu, i called them today and they just finished interviewing april 2nd but the adcom still hasn't met to make final decisions. vcu is taking so long!!! i just got my official rejection from umb lol, they said my pcat scores were too low to be a competitive candidate, which i kind of figured anyways, no real shocker. but yeah, the more time goes by the more i am leaning towards shenandoah. question, do you go to towson university?

Thank you. I agree VCU is very slow in responding, they haven't even acknowledged that they received my application or not. After waiting for a while I gave up on it. Shenandoah is a very good choice, wish you the best! No, I don't go to Towson university, I've completed my bs in california before moving to east coast. If you don't mind, what was your PCAT score? Mine was 69 and I was shocked when UMB invited me for the interview with that score!

mine was 33 the first time and 51 the second time.... haha i know terrible right! honestly, that test doesn't mean anything i don't think.. the first time i took it i did really good in bio and bad in chem and math, then the second time i did really good in chem and math, worse in bio, and horrible in the reading and vocab sections. i just hate that test. so glad i got in and do not have to take it again 🙂 yeah usually UMB is really strict with their pcat scores, it says the minimum score to be considered is 70, something in your application must have stood out to them!

Yeah probably. I am also glad I am done with PCAT!

Interviewed on the 14th and got the acceptance email on the 18th. Will be attending ashburn campus 🙂 see you guys in August!

woo hoo! Congrats! One of my classmates got her acceptance e-mail last night in the middle of ochem lab! See you on Aug. 15!

anyone looking for a female roommate for the fall, PM me! I have a few places in mind... Treetops Park and Stuart Hill Apartments look really nice, but anyone who has any other ideas, let me know! I'm from Maryland and have not a clue about the Winchester area! any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys! I figured since my school was finally over, I would join in here and discuss Shenandoah. I am accepted to Shenandoah for the class of 2015. It looks like they have taken their minimum requirement off for the PCAT. The PharmCAS website does not have minimum on there anymore. Also, if anyone is still worried never give up hope! My friend got into the class of 2014 on August 1st!!! She had to retake her PCAT in June, and when she got her scores back, she was able to become accepted! I'm excited to meet everyone in the fall!!

Hey everyone. Im from CA and will apply this next round. On the pharmcas, there are two campuses, how do I choose a different campus and does pharcas charge me 50 bucks if I check both of them? Should I only choose one or both?

thanks!

Congrats on your acceptance to SU. I attended SU School of Pharmacy for some time but I had to drop out for personal reasons. But if anyone of you is interested in purchasing books, I would be happy to sell my textbooks at reasonable price. I have the following textbooks.

Martini's Anatomy and Physiology--8th ed
Alberts' Molecular Biology of The Cell--5th ed
Pharmaceutical Calculations--13t ed
Social and Behavioral Aspects of Pharmaceutical Care--2nd ed
Pharmacy-An Introduction to the Profession

The top 3 are used both in the fall and spring semesters; the other 2 just in the fall. Good luck and email me at [email protected] if you are interested in buying the books.

I am also applying for the 2012 cycle and I'm not sure what the pros and cons are between the two campuses. I was thinking Winchester because its a bigger class?

Also why is the supplemental application optional? When is it available and is it a good idea to submit it anyway?

Hi all,
I am a current student at SU and will be a p2 next year. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions! As for the differences between the two campuses... the Ashburn campus is much smaller than the Winchester campus. There are a lot more opportunities at the Winchester campus, all of the clubs and pharmacy fraternities are based there. The Ashburn students had to drive over for some meetings or do them via teleconference. The Winchester campus is larger but the professors really try to get to know all of the students, and usually do by the end of the year. After attending a huge school for undergrad with 2-300 in a class I am really enjoying it here. Ashburn is in a much more urban area and some people really like that. Good luck with everything!!

SU received my application on Aug 29. I'm still waiting.....
Does anybody applied to SU and have an interview invitation already?
Thanks

I got an interview invite on August 31st for September interviews, but mine was received back on August 8th.

Maybe this should be moved to school specific discussion? My application was also received on Aug 29th and I havent heard anything yet :/
