Here goes my story: A permanent resident, undergrad from Africa (Ethiopia) with a CGPA of 3.55. A 4.0 CGPA from a community college in USA (Calculus I&II, Orgaic Chemistry I &II included.) Now, I heard from people that US medical schools get nervous when they see courses from Africa and Community colleges. So I decided to apply to a GU post-bac. Very, very exepsensive..over $850.00 per credit hour...too much for an immigrant. I am gonna have to do all the pre-med courses. Time is flying, so does my age. I didn't know there are postt-bac programs at American U., Goucher and UMD, so kind of missed the application deadlines for this fall. GU is the only place I
can attend this fall.

What do you advise me? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Go there, its a good school with a medical school. This is definitely a great place for someone in your situation. Best of luck.

if there is a way to do it financially.. i think its best to start now and not wait another year.. georgetown smp is a really good program and its respected by a lot of med schools..

Is it SMP? If so it is a pretty good program for someone in your case. They also have the GEMS program, which is even better as it guarentees acceptance if you perform satisfactorily. Do a search for it. i would also post this in postbacc forum.

It's not the SMP or the GEMS, it's a post-bacc, not a masters.

Thanks a lot! guys for your ideas.

Unfotunately, it is not the SMP...It is the post-bac. I don't know if any one out there has a success story from the post-bac program at GU. As to the money, I can get a loan since I am eligible for it as a permanent resident with a green card.

Keep doing your thing, THE HELP🙂

If you are positive you want to be a doc I would say go for it. Especially if the program has linkage that will allow you to avoid a glide year and you feel you are ready for the heavy science course load.

But if you are just trying to get your feet wet you could save a lot of money by going the state university route. Just start out by enrolling as a part time non matriculating student. Take Bio, Chem 1 and Physics. (If you think you are ready) Take organic next summer and apply in August.

Good luck!

Save your money...wait until the SPring Semester...and then do your program at UMD...its way cheaper...you get way more advising....and the classes are much easier.

dont forget that you'll be an if you are not a maryland resident, going to u of maryland is going to be really expensive as well. I think if ur going to have to borrow a crapload of money to go to school, you might as well go to a place that will jump out at admissions commitees.
