Hello everyone!

I'm in a bit of a pickle here and unsure if I should apply this cycle or wait for the next given my current situation. I'm a senior and was planning to apply this upcoming cycle. I transferred from a community college to a 4-year university, so my GPA is a combination of both schools with a 3.50 overall GPA and 3.13 science GPA. My GPA at the 4-year is an overall 3.66 and science 3.26.

I entered school not anticipating to do anything in pre-dental, but rather education, so my major is in the liberal arts as well and have been working on my prereqs. I have a slight upward trend in my GPA these past 2 years, but I don't know if that's enough to make up for the mediocre grades I have unfortunately. In addition, I will be finishing up most of my prereqs by the end of summer (will be taking biochem, physics I this summer and all I will only have physics II and the last two parts of the ochem series to complete during the regular school session). I also will be studying to take the DAT this summer around July or August. Hoping to aim for a high DAT score to compensate for my GPA. I've been jamming in all the classes I can take this summer, since I will be graduating and finishing the rest of the courses at a CC again. I have some letter of recs in mind and have around 70 clinical hours in a hospital setting with patient interaction (next rotation, I will be in the dental clinic). I also have over 1500+ community service hours from a club I am in with multiple leadership experiences. I also do research at my school with about 100 hours currently since I just started. I guess the only thing I lack in hours is shadowing hours, but I don't know how important that really is since I've read mixed things on that.

I was wondering if I could get some thoughts on if it's worth applying this cycle? I only plan on applying to the 3 that the fee waiver will waive for me (so I have nothing to lose financially), so I'm looking at probably UCSF, UNLV, and Western. Should I try applying and hoping for the best and a chance to get into a school or wait until the next cycle and I will probably have a better chance at after taking all the classes? What are my chances if I do apply this cycle? Will schools frown down on me if I haven't fully completed all the prereq courses yet? Also given the DAT, I know it takes like 2 weeks to process, so I should have a score by late August I'd assume and that's when my application will be taken off the "hold" to be considered.

Sorry that this post is super messy, but as you can see I'm confused and unsure. I've been going back and forth about it because I don't want to lose a chance at applying and maybe getting in, but if I wait, I might have a better chance. Nevertheless, I'm just unsure which track I should take and need some opinions, so if you can share some with me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I agree that you'll need a high DAT to compensate for your science GPA, but taking it in August is going to make you pretty late in the cycle. You also don't seem to have shadowing hours yet (you don't necessarily need a lot, but you should have some by now). A lot is going to be dependent on the outcome of your DAT score so right now it's hard to call. Also, since you haven't taken organic chemistry yet, doing well on the DAT is going to be more challenging. Overall I would say wait until next cycle (by which time you can finish your pre-reqs, get shadowing hours, raise your GPA, prepare well for the DAT, and apply early rather than late).

Thanks for responding! I hear you on that. I agree that I'd probably be more competitive if I wait and finish everything. Say I do get a high score somehow and was to apply, is the chance slim since the application would be later rather than earlier? Are there repercussions or will it be harder next time for applying twice if rejected the first time? Thank you for your honest feedback! It helps puts things in perspective.
