I took the MCAT but i have not received my score yet. Should i apply with these stats? I am also first generation college student and basically had to figure everything out by myself which was difficult. I went to a fairly competitive UG (UCLA), does that matter? Around what MCAT would i need to be competitive? I also live in California, which i understand is super competitive for Med school.

Do a post-bacc.

I am disadvantaged and low SES. Thats mainly why I dont want to do a SMP. I already took a gap year for the MCATs and I cant afford more gap years. My trend doesnt really have many ups or downs really.

GPA is a bit low but no lethal. You could use a very good MCAT (> 515) and/or a post-bac/masters to supplement.

You're solid for DO and Touro-CA, AZCOM, both Westerns, TUNCOM, BCOM and PacNW should be at the top of your list.

If you're boning for MD, then read this:

Goro's advice for pre-meds who need reinvention

Your GPA isn't very competitive for MD programs, but with a solid MCAT you could compete for a DO spot. I really can't advise you any better without knowing your year-by-year GPA breakdown, ECs, disadvantaged/URM specifics, etc.

These are my ECs - Im currently working on getting some shadowing experience.

- Fast food job - 6 months
- Chemistry Lab tech - 1 Year
- Head College Chemistry tutor for my CC - 1.5 years
- Volunteering - 120 + 40 hours. - all in hospitals
- Field Biology Quarter - 1 quarter
- Student researcher (Job not volunteering) - 2 Years.
- Private chemistry tutor - 6 months (while i studied for MCAT)

From the calculator graph, it seems my cGPA has always been around 3.5.
I am very low SES and have always had to work (as you can see from my ECs- I am 23 and have worked for more than 5 years) and I am a first generation student.

Do you think I have any chance at an MD?

I will apply to all of those DO schools you mentioned. Is there any MCAT score that will make me competitive for MD right now? I did get As in all of my Med school prereqs, except Physics where I got Bs.

Are there any med schools I would have a chance at? Should i even apply for MD?

I hope you're not an international student because with that GPA it would be pretty lethal.

Many international students here have 3.7+ GPAs and 520+ MCAT and still have a difficult time getting into medical school.

If you are an international student I can't recommend any MD schools. If you are a resident of the U.S. then your only ticket would be your MCAT for MD schools otherwise you're best applying only D.O.

No I am not an international student. I am a naturalized US citizen.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, the MCAT seems like my only hope. I won't have my score till June 19th so I won't know till then. I was able to get the fee waiver for the med school application so Im thinking I might as well try.

I'm glad you're a U.S. student. You're still good for D.O. schools if your MCAT is 505+.

On my practice AAMC tests, I received 513, 514 & 518 on exams 1, 2,& 3 respectively. Im thinking ill get higher than 505 since i never scored that low on any FL but of course you never know.

If you were in my shoes, would you do DO now or take a year to do post bacc and do MD?

Your MCAT practice scores look promising so I would apply MD with a couple D.O. schools- I would only do the high tier D.O.s.

Post- baccs imo are only needed for people who need significant grade repair.

If you secure >= 513 I’d apply to MD (be reasonable) and DO

Thats what I was thinking too. Most people on here that have done post baccs have very close to 3.0 GPA. I guess I can only hope for the best on the MCATs and hope the adcoms like my story.

Yes I will definitely try that, do you have any suggestions on med schools if i received >=513? So far im thinking UCD, UCR, CNU, Albany, Keck, and Tulane.

I think you have a shot at MD's if your MCAT is above 513. You may want to find more volunteering work. It's difficult being low-income.

Still a little risky. If he scored like 518 I could see a chance.
