My stats are a 3.8 & 516 with 700 nonclinical volunteering, more than 1000 hours clinical experience, 300 hours nonclinical employment, and 350 hours research with a publication. I’m a reapplicant so I have anxiety which is why I added so many schools. Should I be good to go with this school list? Thanks!

Good to go,
But I have a removed a few schools where you would either be resource protected out, or a bit too low for them (the higher the pole you want to climb, the more slippery it gets).

Suggest adding Emory, NYU.LI, Einstein, Hofstra, U VM

That list is too long and will kill you in the long run.

I do not agree with @Goro with regard to adding Emory and I've stricken it from your list.

Thank you for the feedback. I’ve removed these schools from my list:
- Cornell
- UCSF
- Stanford
- Howard
- Brown
- Yale
- Rush
- Northwestern
- UCLA
- Medical College of Wisconsin
- West Virginia

Agreed that the list is too long. If desired, adding Emory and several of the schools you mentioned/were removed by LizzyM and would be more than fine, but I would limit to 25, maximum 30.

Original post

I made suggestions about networking with schools before applying again, and also a question of your mission fit, which was not disclosed. No breakdown of 700 hours of nonclinical experience. By "hours", you ought to have "enough," but I would like to be sure you didn't have an issue with this. No WAMC following the template... you could be hiding the source of your problems except for your actual essays.

Furthermore, what changed between the last application and now? Some of your hours should have increased in some experiences, so which ones?

The 700 hours are split between tutoring, counseling elementary kids , food bank, and soup kitchen. I worked about full time during my gap year at a clinic where I still work today, so nearly 2000 hours total. In terms of mission fit, I don’t really have one clear direction, though my application is a little more geared toward academic centers more so than the service oriented schools. It very well could be my writing, though I had my personal statement looked at by an advisor so at this point I’m at a loss. Is it still too early really?
Please specifically breakdown your hours tutoring/counseling school children, food bank, and soup kitchen. How many hours were added in the last year, especially during your gap year? I want to know what you did since you reapplied.

Did your advisor give you feedback on all those secondaries that you sent in (both cycles)? Did you change any of your essays from your previous attempt?

The "Thanksgiving rule" still applies. You could get an invitation tomorrow. You could get one by Christmas time or later. We don't control the weather, and we can't anticipate II's.

100 hours foodbank and soup kitchen
300 hours tutoring
300 hours counseling at camps

This last year I added about 30 hours of volunteering total, the rest was clinical hours (~1500 hours additional)
Who did you tutor for 300 hours? What were your responsibilities at the camps?

I do think at some point one of your in-state programs will come knocking. There are many seats available within Michigan, including the DO program at MSU that you eventually will get some attention. The challenge will be mission fit. I don't know what your clinical experiences are focused on or what communities you had exposure to, and if there is anything in common or distinct from the communities you helped in your non-clinical experience.

Which comes to your non-clinical community service: you have a lot of work with kids, so I'm presuming your clinical experience would be with more adults. Even so, I'm not sure you have "enough" service orientation experience, which best comes from your work with the food pantry. I'm a believer of identifying your priorities as they are reflected in how you spend your money and your time. I think some people will give you some credit for being the camp counselor/mentor, but you only added 30 hours of community service/non-clinical activities in the last year. That's not really helpful to show your commitment to serving your community outside a clinical context, which is something that makes "desirable" candidates stand out.

This goes to what your mission fit will be. Every school will have experiences where med students work with kids, so that activity won't distinguish you or give you ammo on "why our school." Tutoring is an overrepresented activity among prehealth applicants, so it won't help you stand out.

I don't know why you weren't successful in your past cycle or haven't gotten more attention this cycle, but mission fit is the key to being successful, and we'll see if you have enough. That's one reason why I'm unsure schools like Central Michigan or Western Michigan (see their missions, again I don't know your mission fit with them) would call on you "now"; they may send an II later as an in-state applicant in the hopes that perhaps you haven't gotten an offer in October or November. It's not over until CYMS comes around (in March/April), and even then, some schools may have some interviews still going.

How much networking did you do with students at schools before you applied, the first time or in this reapp?
