Hi all,

I'm honored to have received 5 interviews so far (UNECOM, AZCOM, KCUMB, LECOM, and MUCOM) and 1 acceptance (UNECOM). After being accepted at UNECOM, I decided to cancel my LECOM interview. The other 3 are scheduled for December but due to financial reasons I really can't go to all 3 (need to fly to each one). I would appreciate any input on which interview to not go to. I can probably afford to fly to 2 more interviews. I'm also still hoping for interviews from schools that are closer to me (places I would most likely attend if accepted). I can post stats/ECs if needed. Thank you for any input!

I would only cancel if you would 100% choose UNECOM over MUCOM.

Otherwise, there's still a chance you don't get into AZCOM or KCU and then you're just stuck with UNECOM and no option for MUCOM.

@sdhere1234 Thanks! Do you think I should cancel one of the others (AZCOM/KCU). I'm a NJ resident so I'd have to fly to all 3. If you have any input on MUCOM vs UNECOM, I'd appreciate that as well. I've done some research and so far I really like both schools.

No. It's really preference, but AZCOM =>KCU>>>UNECOM>>MUCOM

I would agree with this as well. Also I believe UNECOM is implementing mandatory attendance which is a huge negative for me.

If you're happy with UNECOM, then there's no need to go to Indy.

Not sure where you got your pseudo-ranking, but it's what YOU wanna do. I think UNECOM is an excellent school. KCU and KCUMB are different schools though. I think KCUMB is a very good school.

OP its totally preference, I am 98.7% sure I'm going to go ahead and matriculate to my first acceptance school but am still checking out indy on the 5th to see if MUCOM blows me away for some reason, but if your dead set on UNECOM then it seems like a waste of dough tbh

That is the problem. I'm not dead set on UNECOM. I want to give myself as many options as possible but I can't go to all three (AZCOM/KCU/MUCOM) because I'd have to fly to all of them and that's too much money. I'd really like to pick two. The remaining schools I'm waiting to hear back from are all within driving distance so I'd attend those interviews if I'm offered one.

I would cancel AZCOM unless you're down with 60k+ tuition. I was very impressed by both KCU and MUCOM and they are cheaper than both AZCOM and UNECOM.

Call it what you like, but for the years I've been on here it's always been KCU or KCOM = A.T. And the other is KCUMB.

I been on here for 5 years also (2 as a lurker) and KCOM has never been commonly referred to as KCU. KCUMB has changed its name to KCU within the last couple years. This is common knowledge.

Well then please be my guest and go find the thread where I specifically asked why people were saying KCU on an A.T. Still thread and I believe alteredscale was the one who replied that KCU was another name for A.T. Still...just telling you what I was told about 2 years back. Obviously some people thought that, because of the 9 years I've been around I always thought that.

Edit: but, I stand corrected

well i can attest KCU is awesome so i recommend going to that interview.

Now you two are just being jerks. I clearly put in my post WHY I thought what I thought and CLEARLY posted that I was wrong and you take it upon yourselves still be rude about it, lol. Island style, good job posting links to the class threads for so many years, but my reply was in a separate thread so that doesn't help at all. I said I was wrong so you could have left it at that. Feel better?

No hate amigo, the more you know

Being around these boards for so long things become blurry. There are more than a few people who used to call A.T. KCU. No matter if it was proper or not it did happen. It's not a school I was interested in so I never paid too much attention to it.

My apologies brah, the studying is getting to me. KCU had changed its name from KCUMB a couple year back and AlteredScale can definitely confirm this.

Yeah I saw that. Both are good schools, but KCU is definitely worth the money.

You guys shouldn't turn this into a school ranking contest. Imagine if you had an acceptance to both schools in-hand, would you choose UNECOM or MUCOM personally? If it's UNECOM then cancel the interview, if MUCOM then go, if not sure then go if budget allows. Use this processing for each school to determine which interviews you should attend. That's my opinion.

It's not about school ranking, it's about what school has more to offer for the money and/or the location. KCU is a very good program to attend. I would go to KCU over all other choices on that list.

I agree. I think OP should be a bit more specific about what they're looking for in a school to get better advice. Higher board score average, better weather, safer area to live, best food options? 😛

No. You were wrong on the internet. How dare you! Especially about the name of DO schools. There's only 50 of them and 5 open up every year. You're a disgrace.

Lol yeah it's good. It's better to admit your wrong than to try and argue your way through a losing situation. It was just weird, because I asked that SPECIFIC question about who is KCU and it seemed so clear in my mind they said it was A.T. Lol. However, KCU and KCOM are pretty close in resemblance.

I cancelled 5 interviews the day after my DMU acceptance because, well, they are all lateral moves to be honest.

MUCOM is a really good school. They apparently have some of the best rotation sites of the DO schools, and a good relationship with IU. Also, Indiana is one of the best states for physician conpensation (I met an FM doc on the plane there who made like 500K+ a year).

They also have the most l difficult interview I've ever experienced. I've interviewed at 7 DO schools, including the notorious ATSU-SOMA, and nothing holds a candle to the sheer brutality of Marian's.

Lol this sucks to read 2 days before my interview there, can you elaborate on the "brutality" PM me ? Muchas Gracias

I interviewed at MUCOM in September and it was very enjoyable. Was not brutal by any means. I really liked the MMI and it was only 3 stations so it went by super quick. I thought it was my best interview but I was waitlisted unfortunately  Feel free to PM me about it.

My experience was last cycle, so it may be different this cycle. Also, within one interview cohort, they vary the intensity considerably. In my group, some people literally came out crying, and some said it was he easiest thing they'd ever done. Our orientation leader said this was intentional to prevent people from preparing for the interview. I got one of the "medium hard" ones.

It's super hard to describe, especially without violating the NDA, but some of the things that got me were...

-role playing no-win situations (think Kobiashi maru)
-intense ethical questions that make you really wish you'd taken more than 2 semesters of philosophy ("why IS it wrong to do bad things?" Is actually a very difficult question to answer, and "do unto others" doesn't cut it.)
-interviewers changing their tone, mood, and line of questioning several times
-Forcing you to talk about subjects you have no business knowing about (off the top of your head, can you describe a sound business model for a car dealership?) and "I'll look it up later" doesn't work here.
-picking the five most difficult personal questions about your application to ask you...and asking you them all, rapid fire.

In general, it's a expert-level test of mental toughness, charisma, confidence, improvisational ability, and ethical thinking. I'm a good interviewer but I failed this miserably.

An update:

I have been rejected from AZCOM and accepted to KCU-Joplin. Still have interviews at MUCOM and CUSOM coming up but I think I will cancel both of them. I am very much hoping for an interview at Rowan or PCOM (not sure how likely that is).

Currently deciding between UNECOM and KCU-Joplin and no idea how to compare them since KCU-Joplin is a new campus but not a new school. Any comments or suggestions would be fantastic.

OP, the only time you should be cancelling interviews is if you have an acceptance (congrats!!) After this, ONLY cancel interviews if you are 100% certain you wouldn't attend the school over the acceptance you have; you never know what school might impress you.

IMO, definitely attend KCU (biased ), and AZCOM (only if you would be able to afford 60k+ tuition...) Attend MUCOM if you somehow gather the funds for a third plane ticket.

Personal example: never in my right mind did I ever think I would want to live in Alabama.. EVER. I was blown away at my first interview visiting ACOM, and would have been totally happy attending there because the school and the people are awesome! My ACOM may be your MUCOM... you never know.

From what I understand, and I'm sure @AlteredScale can speak to this more, the curriculum at KCU-KC and KCU-Joplin are the same. Which hopefully means the good board scores will carry over. In some cases the rotations might be "better" at Joplin due to the wards that are nearby but this is extremely difficult to determine because like you said it's a new program. But as I know the KCU-KC program more than Joplin, I defer to alteredscales knowledge on this.

KCU-Joplin will definitely hit the ground running, they have two hospitals one being a level 1 trauma with residences that have applied for ACGME and will most likely meet standards to get approved. What's nice about this is that with ACGME accred there will be research requirements and thus as a student at KCU Joplin you will definitely have some good research experiences. You will lack basic science research for now but with the crazy curriculum there's really no time to do this type of research M1 and M2 but you can spend a few months at KCU-KC if you choose to do a research elective for basic science research.

However with this, I would have to say UNECOM is a great place to go if you have a desire to be in the northeast. They have a wide clinical network for clerkships and they do have a mission to have providers in that region. They are very established.

Yeah, that's my job! 😱

Lol, that's a bummer. I'm in the same boat thoat, KCU vs AZCOM.

Thank you everyone for the advice! As of right now (after doing a lot of reading!) I will be attending KCU-Joplin unless I ever hear back from my in state school. I will update this thread if that happens. Good luck all 🙂

That's different than what you said earlier. Ranking which school is best vs best school for you are 2 different things.
ranks serve to ALSO give a general idea of which school MIGHT be best for you.

but hey, arguing semantics is not my forte 🙂
