First of all, I am a non-trad. For some reason I was under the impression that MCAT scores are valid for longer than the 2-3 years that they actually are. Right now I am registered to take the MCAT in May 2019.

The problem is that I will not be applying for the 2019-2020 cycle. In fact, I am not certain exactly when I will be applying as I still need to do a few things to strengthen my application (retake 1 course, more clinical volunteering, non-clinical volunteering, shadowing, figure out LORs). I am worried about putting myself on a time crunch and then having to retake a potential good score. Should I cancel my MCAT and wait to take it until the year I’m ready to apply?

At the moment I have about a year of basic research experience at a major hospital and will soon have one publication as third author. I also spent a year working in a DNA sequencing lab and a year doing contract research. For the past ~2 years I have been working at a medical practice assisting with outpatient surgeries. My weak areas are volunteering and other ECs. I do not have any shadowing at the moment either. I’m not exactly in a rush, but I’d like to get the show on the road so to speak, and I guess having an MCAT score feels like a big step in the right direction.

I’m fairly confident I can get my stuff together within 2 years, but the concern is that if I don’t get in that cycle I’d have to retake anyway. Advice?

If you just need to retake 1 course and do volunteering and shadowing then I'd say its feasible to take it now and cruise into maybe 2020-2021 cycle. You'll be happy you took the MCAT early
