Hi,

Im a freshman who just completed his first semester at college. I ended up with an 88% (B+) in calculus 1 and a 79.5 (B) in Evolutionary Biology. I tried harder then anyone that I know throughout the entire semester, although didn't seem to reach the marks needed to be competitive in the future for dental school. I understand that harder classes are to come, should I be realistic and change majors?

If music or something is a subject you enjoy, major in that. Studying for things you're interested in is a lot easier than studying something that puts you to sleep.

You're gonna have to take the pre reqs for dental school no matter what.
Personally I majored in biology because the degree took care of the pre reqs so it made it easier.

I majored in bio because I love it. If I wasn't going for Dentistry, I would pursue biology.
Op should major in something she/he loves

Pre-dent isn't even a major. Like what everybody said, you can major in anything you want, as long as you get the prereqs done. Choose something you like, and of course something you would be willing to consider pursuing if dental school doesn't end up working out.

You are right. However, just wanted to point out that pre-dent is a concentration under both biology and Chem in my school 😛

Just choose whatever you like, get high grades, and finish your prereqs.
I majored in kinesiology mostly because I ran track in high school and was very interested in anatomy & physiology.
A few majors I've seen in grad school: spanish, engineering, piano performance, history, and business.

If you strive to become a dentist, keep at it. Grades are important but at the end of the day school is there to teach you in subjects you enjoy, as many mentioned above. The only thing I have to comment on in regards to what you said is that you "tried harder then anyone that I know." Sometimes to succeed you have to change what isn't working. If you keep approaching studying the same way and do not get better results, change. If you find yourself studying for hours on end, hone in and focus on what you are trying to achieve. Just because you study for hours doesn't mean you retained it all. Heck a lot of my most valuable studying times came from study blocks, breaks, then more studying. TLDR: Change your study habits and if dentistry is what you want to pursue then don't let that dream fly by, hold on to it and change into the person you want to be.
