This doesn't sound like a great idea at all.Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a good day, and I hope you can answer my question. I have signed up for multiple BSMD programs but as my GPA isn’t as high as others and my ACT score is a little on the lower end I am worried I might not get into any program in the US. I have been looking into the St. George University 7-Year Medical Program as I am sure with my GPA and ACT Score I would be accepted into the program. But one thing I am worried about is that in the information session when I asked a question about the Bachelor Degree Alternative that was being given by this program and she said the Medical Degree is accredited by the US but the Bachelor Degree Equivalent wasn’t. I was wondering if having a non-accredited bachelors degree equivalent from SGU’s 7-year medical program would affect my chances of getting matched into a residency program and if it would affect my chances of getting a job.
Going to SGU or any other non-US school will affect your chances of getting a residency in and of itself. Add to that if there are internal requirements to move onto the medical degree and they're not met, then you're left with debt for a "degree" that isn't recognized with wasted time and money.
Deciding this early to go to SGU only because of a 7-year program and because you may not be eligible/selected for a US-based BSMD sounds slightly impulsive and/or lacking insight to the process and your potential.
I know great doctors and great med students from/at SGU, but times have changed and are still changing. With the direction things are headed, I cannot recommend this path for you.
Go to the US-based college/uni, get a bachelors and take the MCAT and apply to med school.
Thanks, for the advice. I will have to look into what exactly this school has to offer and the risks into greater detail as obviously they wouldn't want to disclose any information that might risk losing money. I understand going to a school outside the US is incredibly risky and an investment that might not even pay off. I hope I can get into a BSMD Program in the US, but if I don't I can obviously apply normally and follow the normal path. This was just a backup option in the back of my mind to just research and get an understanding of it. Once again, thank you.
