I know it is my choice in the end, but I'm pretty much panicking.

Deadline to drop without an F is tonight and I just took my chem lab final. I pretty much didn't do well on it and I'm not sure if I can even get the bare minimum of a C. It will most likely be very lightly curved but I don't think enough to save me.

The class is pretty much out of 1000pts, with maybe an avg of 527 before this final (and two more labs). I have a 507 right now, but looking at how I felt about the final, I'm not sure if I can hit the bare 700 to get a C-.

I'm not exactly proud of what I got (since I'm taking this with Ochem, so I had trouble juggling time)

For the past labs, I got as follow (my score - class avg)

85 - 88
67.5 - 71
81 - 83.5
169.75 - 160

First midterm I messed up
54 - 80.3

Safety test
48 - 44.4

This is inorganic chem lab btw. I'm not too sure since my current gpa is 3.37~ and I don't really think I have much chance to get into a vet school (I'll keep trying obviously, but still...)

If you think that there is no way you can get above a C- by the time finals are over, I would definitely consider dropping it if you still have the chance. Better to have a "W" on a transcript than a "D" or an "F". A D or F won't ultimately nullify your chances of gaining admittance into vet school, but it definitely won't help you either.

Regardless, vet schools won't accept anything below a C for the pre-reqs, so you would have to retake it anyway. So if I were in your shoes and were absolutely certain I would not get at least a C (no minus), then I would drop it. At least this way your GPA wouldn't be as harmed.

Just my 2 cents.

It is much better to drop a class than to fail it - either way, you'll have to retake it, but the drop does not affect your GPA (usually?). BTDT, it hurts, but sometimes you have to cut your losses.

A 3.37 is by no means too low to get into vet school, and if you are still taking inorganic and organic you have time to bring your GPA up. Do what you need to do to improve your time management (and I know it's hard, I had ZERO time mgmt skills when I started college), do well on your GRE's, get varied experience, and you have a decent shot at getting in. Don't give up hope!

Thank you for the replies. I'm pretty much on the verge of dropping.

I talked to some of my apartmentmates and some of them say to tough it out.

And so if I get a C- it doesn't count? I'm really hesitating since I did so much work despite the time juggling to do the lab reports and the class is hard to get into. But if it comes to it, dropping it might be best.

Yeah...thank you for all the replies. I decided to drop it.

I will probably kick myself if I did do decent on the finals, but I suppose looking at it optimistically, if I can get enrolled in the lab again I will be more prepared and hopefully get a better grade.

Yeah, if your school does +/-, a C- does not meet the minimum requirements.

If my school does NOT do the +/- system, but the professors have a choice whether they want to grade that way & vmcas also does the +/- system... does that mean my class doesn't count? I got a c- in biochem. i always thought that it did count. I haven't heard back from any schools about it not counting. Should i be worried about this? I graduated 2 yrs ago so im working now and its not like i want to dish out 1000 to repeat the course.

The general rule is that for any course listed as a pre-req, the minimum accepted grade is a C without exception. So I would expect that if you were to apply to any school for which biochem is a pre-req, then you would need to retake the course. If, however, you apply to schools where biochem is just "suggested" rather than "required", you should be ok.

I would definitely contact your schools of interest about your situation, but I would be prepared to have to retake the class.

thanks for the info! i just checked my IS school and luckily it says min C- in all classes, but i have noooo clue about the rest of my out of state schools. guess i cant do anything now (and its not like i had a big chance of OOS anyway)
