I'm taking an accelerated Orgo II summer course right now. The problem is, I managed to put myself in a situation where I'll probably end up with an 89, with no chance of getting bumped up to an A. I found Orgo I to be pretty easy, and I know I can easily get an A during a full-session Orgo II class. I tested out of a lot of my science pre-reqs (Physics, Bio, Chem), and my schedule is crammed with a lot of required engineering/humanities courses, so I won't have a lot of science classes to balance out my sGPA when I graduate. Even after I take all of my science courses, a B in Orgo II will still drop my final sGPA by .2 grade points (assuming I make A's in everything else). So my questions are: Should I just finish out the class and take the B, or drop it and retake it for an A? Are those .2 grade points worth repeating a course? What do med schools think about dropping a course (especially an important one like orgo) and retaking it for an A versus taking it once for a B? I know getting a B in OChem II isn't a big deal, but the fact that a bone-headed mistake on an exam is the difference between a solid A and a B is really bugging the heck out of me...

I really do not think it's worth it to drop and retake for that little of a grade change. If you were failing and wanting to retake, it'd be a different story, but I think if you told someone on an adcom that you dropped a class to retake a full semester of it because you thought you could only get 89% they would think it to be a little ridiculous. I would imagine they would want you to do something more productive with your time. Just my opinion, though. Who knows what they really want. Maybe someone with a little more expertise can chime in.

take the B.

A B in ochem is nothing to fret about. Take it!

Damn you still in summer school... But I would keep the class and just kiss ass like there is no other, maybe the professor will bump you up..

honestly, take the B. you are not meant to retake or use Ws for B's...

or rock the exam after studying for 12 hours and get an A-?

Hit the eject button and protect your GPA.

Also, others will be contemplating the same thing, and by the time you take your finals you could find yourself on the other side of the curve because everyone else with a B or lower had dropped.

since OP said an 89 is a B and not B+ im assuming there is no A-. im also guessing the 89 is the highest score possible for OP

... is an A within reach with perfect scores from now on or are you saying you'd have to be perfect just to get a 89?

Ironically, the reason I chose to take Ochem II in the summer is because my school is changing to a plus/minus grading system in the fall, so I wanted to try and get that class out of the way before the change. Seems like I could use it right now.

I would take the B, but don't be surprised if an adcom asks you about it. My friend got a B in O chem I and two adcoms asked her about that grade. I am assuming it is too late to drop the class without receiving a "W" right? If so, it is definitely worth taking the B. Good luck!
