One of the physicians who interviewed me this past weekend sent me an article via text message that he thought I would find interest in reading based on our conversation about a certain topic. I got around to reading the article this afternoon and was wondering if it would be appropriate for me to follow up with him? I obviously wouldn't reply via text but he gave me his card as well which has his email address. Should I email him to give him my thoughts on the article and to thank him for his time?

Lol did you exchange numbers during your interview, or did he text you out of the blue after seeing your AMCAS contact info?

Normally, I don’t see why you replying to the text would be a problem given that he instigated, but given the nature of your relationship (interviewer, applicant), I think it would be wise to limit communication via email in the future, especially if you are a female (sounds like he’s an older male physician?).

Mentioning the article in the context of a thank you note/email (which I'm assuming you were going to do anyway) would probably be fine.

That said, I also think it's a bit strange that your interviewer is texting you at your personal phone number. Typically all communications between staff and applicants have to go through "official" channels like applicant portals or .edu email addresses. Is it typical for interviewers at this institution to be texting applicants on their personal cell phones?

I’ve been texted by an interviewer after he gave me his cell number bc he doesn’t respond as quickly on email. I don’t think its a big deal

Good to know - could be just a culture difference between institutions then.

That said, I think OP should still use "official" channels (email/mail/portal) as much as practical. Just my $0.02.

Some (many?) physicians dont give af about institutional norms. If they prefer text then they'll text whoever they want lol
