Is the FAFSA required for internal medical school scholarships?

I've never received federal aid in undergrad and I don't want to waste my time filling it out if it is not necessary. Is FAFSA required for anything other than federal aid?

Just fill it out. Every school I have interviewed at has said they require it. If you use the auto-fill thing based on your tax returns, it takes less than 30 minutes.

Also the medical school population has a considerably higher family income than the undergrad population. You may be surprised what you are eligible for.

Also worth noting, the FAFSA doesn't require parental info for grad and professional students but a lot of medical schools still want that info even if you're not a dependent

Do we submit the parental info individually to the schools?

You can enter it into FAFSA. It isn't "required" but it gives an option. It even says you don't have to enter this but some schools such as medical schools may want it.

My school wants a FAFSA complete with parent info in order for me to be considered for any scholarships. Weird that they want my parents, since they're also requiring me to declare myself independent, but whatev. Just do it, you're going to waste time on a whole bunch of other stuff between now and August anyway.

Yes, do the FAFSA, include parent info. Yes even if you're 40 with kids of your own. Some schools require it for consideration for need-based scholarships. Unless it's going to be a massive hassle to get your parents' information, just bite the bullet and fill it out.

Should this be filled for all schools you have been accepted to ? or have II from?

I've done it for every school I've got an II for. If you get rejected nothing happens and if you get accepted it's just complete earlier and saves you the time of adding them on later

I only put in the ones I got accepted to. You can go back and update later, so if I get into more schools I can add them.

So if we submit our FAFSA now with no acceptances, nothing happens? I wasn't sure if we were allowed to. I am waitlisted at one school and have two II coming up. I was going to wait to submit until I was accepted, but I also fear that if I have to wait too long I may be too late for aid.

During one of my interviews we had a meeting with the financial adviser who said to start filling it out that day (interview was sometime in early October) regardless of if we've heard anything back yet. If you don't get accepted they just don't process it.

Great! Thank you for sharing this. I've been confused about that processes. Will be filling it out soon 🙂

Pretty sure you need to fill out a FAFSA if you want any kind of federal government loan. If you or your parents are completely financing your education, then I don't think you need it.

Repinging this. I am still debating about filling out the FAFSA, it doesn't make sense to do it if I have to put my parent's info on it - there is no way I will qualify for anything. So what should I do? Fill it out and exclude parent's income, Fill it out with parent's income, or don't waste time filling it out?

If you want to take out federal loans for school, you need to fill out FAFSA. The government doesn’t care what your parents make, you can still take out the cost of attendance in loans.

You don’t have to use your parents info - you’ll get the same loans without it. Include your parents info if the school you are attending requires it for school loans or scholarships. So in summary:

US government will give you the same loans with or without parents’ income

Schools have different policies on whether to include parental income for school-specific financial aid, so check with the financial aid office.

Finally, unless your parents are planning to pay for everything, you’ll need to apply to take out any government loans. So fill it out - there’s no harm in completing it. And your parents’ income will not have any impact on the government loans you can take out, regardless of whether you included it or not.

Side note:
The school I’m going to requires my parents’ income for need based scholarships, but gives merit scholarships regardless of parents’ income. Many schools require the fafsa for both.

I will be able to pay for medical school in full, no loans necessary, and my school doesn't need the FAFSA for merit scholarships. There is no reason to fill out the FAFSA right?

Can schools that I am waitlisted at see whether or not I have filled it out and what info I put in it? In other words, will my FAFSA have any impact of me getting off of a waitlist?

Will schools be more likely to admit me if they know I do not need financial aid?
