Currently I have a 3.5 overall GPA and a 3.3 science GPA. I just got a C+ in Ochem on the quarter system, so my current GPA is going to change. I still have to take a quarter of Ochem, a quarter of physics, 2 quarters of biochemistry, and a lot more biology courses. I got a B- in the 1st the quarter of Ochem. Do you think I need to reconsider my career path, since I'm doing horribly in Ochem or is there still hope?

If its what you want to do, then it shouldn't really matter...just show some improvement in higher level classes and you should be fine.

there's still hope...calm down, get your **** together, and own in your remaining classes

best of luck

If you want to quit because you don't want to study harder for an easy Ochem class then yes, I think you should.

Wow, what's with these people who think getting one C will doom them? LOTS of people get more than one C, and do just fine, you're worrying waaaay too much. I got a C in my first semester of Ochem, and then a D in the second half, which I had to retake. I also got a sprinkle of C's here and there elsewhere, and I'm about to finish my second week of dental school. Come back and ask that question when you get a D or F in a pre-req, otherwise you're fine.

You got a grade you're not so happy about, pick yourself up and do better, that's all there is to it. Good luck!

Man! I really enjoy reading your posts, and good luck in your D school. You deserved that 👍

It irritates me how that universities scare their premed students by saying that if they get one C, they're chances of getting into a professional school are doomed. It becomes obvious that other universities besides mine do this when I see so many people on these forums scared of what their future holds for them when they get a C in a prereq.

quit complaining, pansy.

its only september. there are a TON of interviews given out post-december even. just chiiiiiiiiiill

I've received four pre-december interviews so far, with two of them in the very first interview cycle, so I think I'm set.

I took the "intro to dentistry" class at BYU and they scared me into thinking I didnt have a chance at dentistry due to competition.

I looked into optometry, shadowed an optometrist once and found it was way too boring for me. Decided I would stick it out through the rest of the upper level science classes, i've done well and will take the DAT after 4 months of study (maybe overkill, i just want to destroy it).

Have some faith in yourself. Can you imagine yourself at a desk job 10 yrs from now hating your life making $60k thinking "if only I had stuck it out 1 more year". Work hard, it will be the best investment of your life.

I think think this scare approach might force many students to study harder, but when a student gets a C in one class depression might set in. The scare approach may help many students, but then again you wonder how many it hurts. Some students feel like they're ready to give up after one C, while the notion that one C is going to hurt your admission is so far from the truth.

Dentistry is a truly amazing profession. I would prefer it over any other medical profession because of the artistic aspects that the job entails. There isn't other bones more complex structurally than teeth other than say bones of the hands and feet. That complexity and the artistic talent that it takes to repair teeth amazes me.
