Hi Everyone!

I got accepted to Case and got a $15,000 annual scholarship. The thing is, I have to keep an 85% to keep the scholarship. Is that even possible in dental school? Does Case have anything to offer that is any better than OSU or Pitt? Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Not impossible, but it's definitely hard.. You'd want do well on all the classes if you want to specialize anyways, and most of our class study hards anyway, because we just do, even though it's pass and fail.
After having a semester behind me @ Case, one thing that might stop you from achieving 85% is Dental Anatomy. Our class mean was 73% and 20 students failed.. I think only handful got above 85%. I don't know if your scholarship is for average of 85% or you have to get 85% or above on all the classes. Latter case will be hard because of Dental Anatomy, but otherwise, there are some really easy classes that will up your average quite a bit... So I don't know how it works, I think class of 14 is the first class to receive the scholarships.. 85% or above is not easy, at least for Dental Anatomy..

thanks for replying! Do you think that the sim lab and the PBL are helping you learn better?

I graduated in 2009 and we had people in our class receiving scholarships.

I also graduated in 2009 and Dental Anatomy was easy as *ell in 2005. I mean, seriously, I loved that class. I'm sure Dr. J must still be teaching there. The way I see it is this. If you're smart enough to get a scholarship at Case, then you're already a very smart individual and at the top of your class. I never got a scholarship at Case and I got great grades there. 85% is very doable. Ultimately, you have to decide if Case is right for you for other reasons. Scholarships are a great plus though.

I totally agree with ski.bum..

I finished the first semester at Case. 85% is very doable. Even with dental anatomy it is not hard. The highest score was 95%. Dr. J also gave us some extra points. I studied two days and got 86%. It is not great but given the time I studied, it is an OK mark. Overall, classes are simple.
My concern was that we wasted so much time on PBL. I don't know if it was just me but I really didn't like PBL. I think we would learn much more from lectures... So I regretted coming here because of PBL.
If I were you I would goto OSU for sure.
Also the DentSim is not a big deal (Before I started the dental school, I thought it was great that we have chance to 'drill' in the first yr..). Most of the time the computer is not working anyways.
So if you are from Ohio goto OSU

haha hello classmates
I just finished the first semester at CASE too.
85%+ is not too hard if you have decent background information. (pre-reqs)
It wasn't too hard for me to get all above 85.
a lot of our courses have class averages around 85.
Yes the only course that might keep you down is dental anatomy but
you can do it 😀
we'll see how the second semester goes.

Not really just a hefty price tag!
