hi everyone, I have been accepted into university of cincinnati- i was previoulsy on the wait list there. I have already accepted North East ohio university college of medicine (NEOUCOM) offer (I did that last december) I don't know if I should change my decision and go to cincinnati-i turned down 3 other offers on may 15th but those schools weren't as highly ranked and cincinnati-ex toledo, mcw, and dayton. If i go to Neoucom i will be saving at least $80000 because I will be living at home and going to school cause my family lives 10 mins away from the school and I really do like living at home and I don't want to go to cincinnati just to leave home but at the same time I am afraid if I say no to cincinnati now I might regret it later if I don't get a good residency. Do you guys think that it worth taking the extra loan and go to cincinnati, if it was something like harvard, I would think twice about it, but is cincinnati really that good that i should go there? (Also, I really didn't like the city that much during my interview, and the only reason I would go there would be because of the reputation.) Ultimately does the med school you go to make a difference with regards to what residency you get (i want to derm and a bunch of people from neoucom get into derm each year-about the same number as cincinnati) Once you get you MD degree does any one care which school you went to or do people care more about your residency. I would really appreciate your input and comments and tell me what you would do in this situation. Please help!! I need to tell them by tommorow whether I am coming or not 🙂 🙂
thnx
Go to Cincy. I am MS2 there, and the school is so much more than reputation. The first year profs are excellent; the material is integrated well, plenty of clinical correlation, and the profs are very personable, available, and willing to help with any problems you may be having with material. I didn't think I would enjoy my 1st year as much as I did, and I attribute much of this to the quality of teaching.
Cincy has amazing research opportunities. Between the medical school, University Hospital, and Cincinnati Children's, you can find research in any and every field you may be interested in.
The students at UC are very laid back, fun, and willing to help a fellow classmate grasp the material. The med students go out and hang out together, and at least in my class, are the work hard, party hard variety. Students are continually sending emails out to the whole class to share study guides, mnemonics, and helpful websites. In all, the learning atmosphere here at UC is great.
Plus, as you stated, the reputation of UC is very high, and the school has been working hard so that our reputation should rise via a new $25 million renovation of the school as well as annual increases in NIH research money. Beyond this, Cincy has plenty of high-powered faculty in many different fields so that you can get some great letters of recommendation for your residency app.
I know $80,000 is alot of money, but seriously, go to where you will be happy. Will you be happy living with your parents for 4 years with all the studying and responsibility of med school? It sounds like you are close to your family, but it can be very difficult for people outside of medicine to understand the stress and commitment of medical school. It may be a tough choice for you, but in my opinion, and if I had to choose all over again, I would choose Cincy.
