hi everyone, I have been accepted into university of cincinnati- i was previoulsy on the wait list there. I have already accepted North East ohio university college of medicine (NEOUCOM) offer (I did that last december) I don't know if I should change my decision and go to cincinnati-i turned down 3 other offers on may 15th but those schools weren't as highly ranked and cincinnati-ex toledo, mcw, and dayton. If i go to Neoucom i will be saving at least $80000 because I will be living at home and going to school cause my family lives 10 mins away from the school and I really do like living at home and I don't want to go to cincinnati just to leave home but at the same time I am afraid if I say no to cincinnati now I might regret it later if I don't get a good residency. Do you guys think that it worth taking the extra loan and go to cincinnati, if it was something like harvard, I would think twice about it, but is cincinnati really that good that i should go there? (Also, I really didn't like the city that much during my interview, and the only reason I would go there would be because of the reputation.) Ultimately does the med school you go to make a difference with regards to what residency you get (i want to derm and a bunch of people from neoucom get into derm each year-about the same number as cincinnati) Once you get you MD degree does any one care which school you went to or do people care more about your residency. I would really appreciate your input and comments and tell me what you would do in this situation. Please help!! I need to tell them by tommorow whether I am coming or not 🙂 🙂

Go to Cincy. I am MS2 there, and the school is so much more than reputation. The first year profs are excellent; the material is integrated well, plenty of clinical correlation, and the profs are very personable, available, and willing to help with any problems you may be having with material. I didn't think I would enjoy my 1st year as much as I did, and I attribute much of this to the quality of teaching.

Cincy has amazing research opportunities. Between the medical school, University Hospital, and Cincinnati Children's, you can find research in any and every field you may be interested in.

The students at UC are very laid back, fun, and willing to help a fellow classmate grasp the material. The med students go out and hang out together, and at least in my class, are the work hard, party hard variety. Students are continually sending emails out to the whole class to share study guides, mnemonics, and helpful websites. In all, the learning atmosphere here at UC is great.

Plus, as you stated, the reputation of UC is very high, and the school has been working hard so that our reputation should rise via a new $25 million renovation of the school as well as annual increases in NIH research money. Beyond this, Cincy has plenty of high-powered faculty in many different fields so that you can get some great letters of recommendation for your residency app.

I know $80,000 is alot of money, but seriously, go to where you will be happy. Will you be happy living with your parents for 4 years with all the studying and responsibility of med school? It sounds like you are close to your family, but it can be very difficult for people outside of medicine to understand the stress and commitment of medical school. It may be a tough choice for you, but in my opinion, and if I had to choose all over again, I would choose Cincy.

Ultimately I would go where you think you're going to be the happiest. However, I do think that Cincinatti is going to provide you more opportunities than the other school you are considering. If you think that you are interested in pursuing a more competitive field, i.e. derm, rads, opthamology, I would definitely go to Cinci. But in the end, you go with your gut.

p.s. ask yourself: do I really want to be living with my parents for the next four years?

GO!

I have some friends currently in practice in Atlanta who went to UC. They thoroughly enjoyed the academic and social experiences. More importantly, they all were involved in research, bagged really great residencies (ENT, Opth, and last one is Rads) and two even got PhD's.

It is a great school and town (personal bias - I grew up there!)

But do make a decision which you know you shall be happy with. Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize.

Best Regards,

Dude, JMO if about the same # of people get into derm as they do in Cincinati, I would say stay at NEUCOM and save $80K. That's a lot of money, if you are cool with staying with your parents for 4 years. But again, I hear that school name does matter. I personally don't care but then again I'm not planning into going into anything too competitive.

From where do you get 80k savings? Tuition at the two schools are roughly the same. Sure, you'll be paying for your own food and rent/mortgage, but Cincinnati isn't very expensive.

I'd focus more on the long-term consequences and all the other reasons cited previously.

both are allopathic

UC grads are very highly regarded by residency program directors. I was told this on several of my interviews, even outside of Ohio. The difference is clinical skills. We start internships a head above our peers from other schools. Most likley it's because of all the AI's they make us do (which we all complained about at the time.. I think I did 4). But ultimately, you will be a better prepared intern because of them.

I also agree with the above poster in regards to the collegial atmosphere at UC. It is a rare and special place where students teachers and attendings actually get along, and work well together.

Ultimately, if you want derm you can get it from any school. Just do well on the boards, get some research published, and do away rotations early on in yor 4th year.

Good luck,
