I'm not sure if this is the best board for this, but here's a question for all the EMT-B's out there.

I am currently working as an ED tech in a community hospital. This summer I am due for by biyearly recertification of my EMT-B. However, I also plan to spend a lot of time on my med school application and working a to save up for application costs.

I don't need the cert to keep my current job and could probably even get another tech position with my experience alone. I also have no ambitions to work the truck.

So should I let my cert expire? I know that it is much harder to get it again, but I am not sure I will need it again.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for reading my massive post.

I would try to keep it because you never know whats going to happen in the future........Unless you are absolutely positive you will never need it again. I plan on keeping mine for as long as i can.

"Probably" and "not sure" have a habit of coming back to bite you. Until you replace them with "woohoo, I have a better certification" I wouldn't (and didn't) let them expire.

Also, you're right, it is much more annoying to recert once you've let it expire. Coneds not difficult. I think you can even do EMT-B coned entirely online and through magazines...

I renewed mine the first time, but after 4 years I let it lapse. Didn't need it for my current position and I plan on being a doctor not a medic. However, I would have re-certified if I had time to do a refresher course (the first time I had enough EC's), but I've been too busy getting ready to apply, going to class, and working.

I kept mine and I also did not need it to work in the ED that I worked in. I decided to go into emergency medicine, so I think maintaining that license helped, because it showed my continued commitment to the field. Granted this probably only accounted for a small amount of my success, but during the whole residency match process, every little thing that can set you apart is good.

How much trouble is it to get it renewed? I'm an M1 and decided to renew mine this winter even though it cost me $150. Chances I am ever going to use it now? Approaching 0%. Chances I would have needed it if I didn't renew it? Almost 100%. If you really can't afford it, or if you are going to have to sit through over 40 hours of class, maybe not, but if you can keep it with a minimum amount of effort, I would go for it. I play on the safe side of things, but you never know when the requirements will change for your job or god forbid you don't get into school (knock on wood) an extra certification never hurt.

I think in my case i will always probably need it in some fashion because i still plan on being a firefighter( even part time) no matter what happens, so i will always need my EMT cert.

Where I live you need 24 hours CE's for county re-cert, and ~48 hours for national registry re-cert. Also skills check must be done by an approved agency.

Basically it would have required two weekend of class (both saturday & sunday).

Dear god no. You have a job. You don't need the bull**** card.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. Nice to know that there are so many fellow EMT's on SDN.

I think I will renew, it shouldn't be too much hassle. I guess I just needed a little peer pressure.

I also recommend cigarettes and unprotected whoopie.

I just quit 6 months ago, actually (cigs not whoopie). As for the unprotected sex, I think that the time is not ripe for the fruit of the mommy and daddy dance.

^Sorry. I just had to use that line.
