Hey all,

I recently have been lucky enough to receive a medical school acceptance, and now I'm wondering if I should bother jumping through the hoops to renew my NREMT license. I am not currently working in a medical setting, so I can only renew it under "inactive" status. Even that will take lots of footwork and require me to get an extra 24 hours of CEU's. Is it worth it?

Thanks,

Doesn't sound worth it unless you really want to work as an EMT from now til med school.

Do you intend to practice before going to med school? Are you enough above avg that you could actually hold down a part time job while in med school or over the summers. (Hey, there are always those who can pull it off....) It really depends on whether or not you are ready to give up your cert yet....

If you can volunteer as an EMT while in medical school without sacraficing your grades, I'd recommend it. In the end, it depends on how enthusiastic you are about serving as an EMT.

Do as you please.

As a fellow EMT i would go ahead and keep it renewed. I plan on staying an EMT my whole medical career even as a doctor.

What a waste of skill. Doctors are paid more for a reason - their skills are more valuable to the country/there's a high demand for doctors. Hopefully you change your mind and decide to just work more hours as a doctor.

no, i would not. i am also an emt (4 years) and will not renew my license. you will be busy as it is in medical school. the point of emt was to develop those skills pre-med school, but as a med student youre developing different, more applicable (to your future job) skills that you need to focus on. there is no point in keeping your emt license as a physician...you will never use it, the information in emt is VERY basic, and also as an intern or resident, i believe that you are prohibited from working other jobs or moonlighting as an emt on an ambulance to make more money. with that said, if you cant use it, if you will learn all the medical stuff in a lot more detail and use that as a physician, there are no benefits to keeping emt license as a med student. i would focus on all the skills you need that you dont learn in emt...which is a LOT...pass the boards, etc.

I'm not going to work as an EMT by any means. I will stay on as a volunteer at a small volunteer fire dept though. If I were to go into Emergency Medicine I think it would be beneficial to keep the credentials as well to show people that you started out on the streets and you know first hand the way that medicine works in the pre-hospital setting. Some EM docs I know get paid an extra amount for keeping the credentials as well.

I have a friend that worked as a paramedic through medical school and his first year of residency and it worked well for him. After that, though, there was no reason for him to continue working a relatively low-paying side job when he could moonlight as a physician for a ton more/hour. Comes down to pure economics and shortage of available time.
