Should I still try to do research and ECs if I'm just making 80s generally..??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Research won’t make up for poor board scores. I wouldn’t stretch yourself any thinner, but that’s just me. There will be more time for research in third/fourth year (especially if you can set up a research dedicated month for a rotation)

How did one class drop you below at 3.0? I’m confused.

Seems like he was getting all B's (3.0), so anything below a B (even a B-) will drop his GPA below 3.0. But I see what you're saying - how far below a 3.0 did one single class drop you, OP?

If the C was in a big class it could have done this. Especially if he is early in the curriculum. I had to fight to get myself over 3.0 after starting in a hole 1st semester, so I get it. As far as research goes for those fields, not super important depending on the 'tier' of course.

Hey all. Current DO student here. I did reach out to some other people here via pm, and If I see this again please forgive me, as you don't have to answer..

I am generally getting 85s on major class exams (systems and core classes) and more often than not higher than that but sometimes lower than that but usually not below an 80...

I messed up on one class so my gpa is below a 3.0 so I can't participate in research or any extracurricular activities at my school... Not that I really was before my gpa dropped below a 3.0

I mean I could still do research or other stuff on my own but I don't have a ton of time to do that. I hardly have time beyond studying to do anything. I just worry if I devote time to other stuff my grades will drop and thus my board scores will drop in the future since I know Medical school grades correlate strongly with BOARD scores.

I really am trying to match Neuro, PMR, or IM, Slightly thinking about psych but unlikely. Should I try to do research or ECs if I want to match into a decent program in this fields?

Thanks.
Just do a summer research program

No. This isn't pre-med. It's not important. Research is the only EC that matters.

No research can break your resume depending on what you want and how your other stats are.

Classes come first

Agree for sure. Unless you have some jammin' ECs like leadership positions in national organizations spanning multiple years, and other stuff that looks like you genuinely care about something rather than being secretary of some lame campus organization that had 2 meetings the whole calendar year.

Also agree that classes come first. No one says, "well, this applicant is 4th quartile with a 205 step but dang look at all those clubs and professional organizations.."
